[opensuse-factory] RC1 looks good on G3 iMac

Just finished installing RC1 on G3 iMac from 1997 - looks pretty good. Biggest problem by far remains since at least early Betas - other bootable systems (e.g. OS-X, other Linux) on the HD are ignored by the installer when setting up the boot loader. Raised bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=396361 for this. First stage of installation says it will reboot now, but doesn't - X window goes black except for a cursor, other ttys continue as before and top shows > 99% idle. Forcing a reboot results in fsck check on restart (i.e. something wasn't umounted). Anyone else have this before I raise a bug? Once system is up, GUI login screen is impossible to navigate with keyboard alone (i.e. no mouse) - can't even readily select a console login. Is this intentional - looks like a bug to me. Only other thing I noticed was the ever-changing DHCP addresses noted elsewhere - happens on PPC / iMac too! Looking good though for 11.0... -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Speed and RAM?

Don't have that problem on my Wallstreet. It reboots fine and then finishes the installation after reboot.

Don't have the problem either. Everything works just fine. Only irritating thing I have seen is that I still have the kernel panic on the MESH controller that only seems to affect that machine. It's usually fine after it reboots. Had that since v10.0

Haven't noticed that on SuSE. Have seen it on Fedora 8 though. Ended up just assigning an IP for that box. Maybe it's a kernel problem. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Same machine as in last week's mails - 450MHz PPC cpu, 512M RAM

I think I will try repeating the installation with only 1 stick of RAM - mainly to check that it will work with that amount. Then I'll look out for the same behaviour. Am I right in thinking that a "Wallstreet" is essentially the same beast as my G3, but as a laptop? Probably some important differences under the cover though.

Another thing to look out for when I repeat the installation. I may try to use an external USB drive this time, I know it's only the slowest incarnation of that bus, but I want to see if it will fly.

Either way it seems not to be specific to PPC. -- Cheers Richard (MQ). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Duh. Sorry, didn't look at the name.....

Unfortunately, the isn't a version of memtest for the ppc.....

In a few ways. The Wallstreet is the same as the G3 Beige or All in One machines. They are old world machines. The iMac is New World. Has 100Mhz bus(vs 66 for Wallstreet) and maxes at 1GB RAM. Here's a spec sheet for you machine: http://lowendmac.com/imacs/450-mhz-imac-g3-2000.html Here's mine: http://lowendmac.com/pb2/wallstreet-powerbook-g3-ii.html

Yes, shame. I ran the install with only 256M and it went fine. No sign of the failure-to-reboot either, so no bug report FTTB. This time I chose XFCE4 desktop, very responsive even with the reduced RAM. A nice touch - or maybe a bug - was that the external USB DVD with the full install medium in it was automatically sensed and used by the boot CD - whether I wanted it or not. Useful, if unexpected.

Yes, not quite the same beast, though clearly related. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
