[opensuse-factory] YaST2 SSHD Module - Call for help/volunteers
Hi, As you probably know, we've added a new yast2-sshd package that configures the sshd daemon to the openSUSE 10.3. http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=yast2-sshd&distro=openSUSE_103 This module was started as an exemplary YaST module for YaST tutorial http://forgeftp.novell.com/yast/doc/SL10.3/tutorials/t1.html Now it seems the the openSUSE community would like to have it extended. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=333655 ...but isn't that the best way for the community to learn more about YaST, about the powerful features we currently offer? Isn't that great that to community already has all pieces to change YaST to do what they exactly want? That's why I'm writing this mail. I'd like to encourage $you, even if you aren't an experienced developer, don't you want to learn more, don't you want to try it? This is the current SVN of YaST SSHD module: http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/yast/trunk/sshd/ So, please, just try that..., send me a patch..., whatever ;) Thanks & Bye Lukas -- Lukas Ocilka, YaST Developer (xn--luk-gla45d) ----------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s. r. o., Lihovarska 1060/12, Praha 9, Czech Republic

I installed the rpm and had a quick look. Well, in my opinion, the YaST SSHD module should contain all features that the community needs :) If you feel it is reasonable, go on! ;) ... but of course, "the community" should agree on that ... Um . . . on the third screen (clicking NEXT twice) I was able to select protocol level 1, 2, or both, as well as the cyphers. Am I misinterpreting what you are asking for here? --Jonathon On Wed, 2007-10-17 at 21:58 +0200, Lukas Ocilka wrote:

I looked too hastily. I saw those afterwards, my bad. It works as it should imho :) P.S. Well, in my opinion the problem might be that the current YaST module is just not as useful as it could be because users don't see what they can actually configure. They maybe don't understand the current layout, texts, helps ... UI needs polishing, texts too. And actually, there still might be some more features to be added. Although you may be correct in that it needs polish, don't forget that this is a great step forward in getting CLI config tasks into YaST. Every marathon starts with the first step. Now if I could just get wpa_supplicant configuration into YaST . . . Jonathon M. Robison "There are 10 kinds of people in the world. I guess, you mean something like this http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Wireless_Network_in_First_Stage_Installation but with YaST UI, right :)? It's actually not that easy as it seems to be for the first sight, there several issues you need to cover, such as the type of authentication, encryption, etc. Hard to say whether it is worth the effort to invest a time into wpa_supplicant configuration when we have other ways to do it: For YaST there is just a sysconfig file for configuring a wireless network and NetworkManager tool seems to do it pretty well automatically. Anyway, your opinion counts! Bye Lukas

I've filed some real enhancement request at this http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_SSHD_Server/Enhancements_WIP wiki page. The current YaST SSHD screenshots can be found here http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_SSHD_Server Some of enhancements are quite easy to do even if you don't known any programming language, what they actually need is just to think about the current wording and propose a better-understandable one. Hmm, nobody interested in "How should be the current YaST SSHD module enhanced/fixed?" Or do everybody agree to what's written at http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_SSHD_Server/Enhancements_WIP? There's not even a single-word-change ;) So, either everyone likes the current yast2-sshd or nobody uses it. In that case, why should we care :)? Thx && Bye Lukas

Maybe nobody who is reading this list uses it. I didn't know that it exist, and vim /etc/ssh/sshd_config is still faster. But I don't say that this module is useless for newbies! But they don't read that list. Lukas, I don't use it because: (a) I didn't know of it until your message and (b) I can't find it in 10.2 or 10.3 (*) - is it only in Factory (which I'm not currently using)? (*) I'd expect SSHD config to be under either "network services" or "security"? Is it hidden on a third level somewhere? Or am I just being a bit thick? (a) I didn't know of it until your message and (b) I can't find it in 10.2 or 10.3 (*) - is it only in Factory (which I'm not currently using)?
Hmm, what about the second DVD :)? or http://benjiweber.co.uk:8080/webpin/index.jsp?searchTerm=yast2-sshd Repository http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3/repo/oss/suse contains yast2-sshd (2.15.3)
(*) I'd expect SSHD config to be under either "network services" or "security"? Is it hidden on a third level somewhere? Or am I just being a bit thick?
I might well use it if I could...
You can find it under "Network Services" but it needs to be installed ;) We were unfortunately unable to place it on the base DVD1 :( and so it's also not in the base installation pattern. Of course, editing the sysconfig file is still faster if you know where and how to change the configuration. It's job for YaST to make it more user-friendly ;) Lukas -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.4-svn0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFHHlEvVSqMdRCqTiwRAgf6AKCHKXuiF70m2mr0VTZMroEs1VmB+wCdFko2 EoSw1s02nVJw2TagcO7WoiI= =Sjw/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi, On Friday evening, I've changed the UI layout of YaST SSHD Configuration Module to use tabs instead of [Back]/[Next] Wizard. Tabs are more intuitive and match the user's needs and expectations better. The current screen~shots can be found here: http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_SSHD_Server You'll be able to download the new yast2-sshd package from FACTORY soon. Anyway, the "call for help" still remains :) There are several places that need to be polished, fixed: * Helps (they are some, but they're not helpful at all) * Check-boxes could have some better labels (more understandable) * "Supported Ciphers" feature doesn't work. * And some more ... ;) Anybody interested, please :)?
