[opensuse-factory] Yast2 and USB Printers
Hey Group; I have a USB Brother MFC 7840W and their custom driver for Linux. It was a RPM and downloaded from Brother's site for this printer, fax and scanner. I call up Yast2 (console or X) and the printer is found under Hardware. It seems to setup /etc/cups/ and printcap. Cups "d" is running according to "ps ax | grep cups" "lp file.text" seems returns a job number and lpq shows it. As for USB - lsusb and hwinfo --usb show it. Plus hwinfo --usb shows a kernel module that is seen with "lsmod" A website showed a way to test it using lptest and that worked for a test page. Where are what is causing it not to print? Sometimes it will wake up the display and says "Rec. Data" and then "Sleep". My guess is it is Brothers problem. Things like strace -fo stop at the end of cups from "lp file.txt" -- 73 de Donn Washburn 307 Savoy Street Email:" n5xwb@comcast.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 LL# 1.281.242.3256 Ham Callsign N5XWB HAMs : " n5xwb@arrl.net " VoIP via Gizmo: bmw_87kbike / via Skype: n5xwbg BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador " http://counter.li.org " #279316 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

maybe this is somehow related (?): http://georgherdt.de/technology/epson-c1100-on-opensuse-11.2.html Using ghostscript-library-8.64-23.1 from repo Printing:ghostscript/openSUSE_11.2 instead of standard distribution's version solved non printing issue with EPSON Aculaser C1100 and Brother HL-2030. Using
ghostscript-library-8.64-23.1
from repo
Printing:ghostscript/openSUSE_11.2
instead of standard distribution's version solved non printing issue with EPSON Aculaser C1100 and Brother HL-2030.
The latter looks more like https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557948 because http://georgherdt.de/technology/epson-c1100-on-opensuse-11.2.html reads "-sDEVICE=bitrgb" which looks similar to "-sDEVICE=bitcmyk" and ghostscript-library.changes in the ghostscript-library package in the Printing:ghostscript project already contains: -------------------------------------------------------------------- - Add patch to correct bitcmyk blank output on e.g. Samsung CLP-300 and other printers (bnc# 557948) -------------------------------------------------------------------- If it is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557948 then monochrome printing should work but no color printing and a downgrade of ghostscript-library helps. If it is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=559697 monochrome and color printing works only for a little bit (e.g. a small test page or the very top of a page) and then data transfer breaks with whatever kind of USB I/O errors and a downgrade of libusb helps. Back to my problem. I just load Fedora and the printer worked right off

Thanks Johannes and Nicolaus; I did look at the BUG report and my model was not shown but I bet the problem is the same. I did install both Brother RPMs and Yast and cups seem happy. lsusb/hwinfo and lsmod show correct information. It does act like the system is working and usb is not handling the request. -- 73 de Donn Washburn 307 Savoy Street Email:" n5xwb@comcast.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 LL# 1.281.242.3256 Ham Callsign N5XWB HAMs : " n5xwb@arrl.net " VoIP via Gizmo: bmw_87kbike / via Skype: n5xwbg BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador " http://counter.li.org " #279316 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
