[opensuse-factory] Feature request: open-vm-tools as part of the release
Hi, I always try new test releases in a VMware virtual machines. The current opensuse 11.0 alpha 2 fails to compile the supplied vmware-tools modules, as the VMware package does not support 2.6.24 kernels. VMWare have open-sourced the tools here: http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/ I have tried to build from these sources, and the modules build OK and integrated in 10.0 alpha2. So, I suggest that an rpm is build out of these sources, and included as standard with any opensuse release, so it can flawlessly be used in virtual machines. Is there a better place than this mailing list to post such a feature request? Like bugzilla, or something else? Cheers -- Svetoslav Milenov (Sunny) Even the most advanced equipment in the hands of the ignorant is just a pile of scrap. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Not really, no. Placing it here allows others to support or object the request. And if it makes sense, there are enough developers subscribed to put it to work :) Greetings, Stephan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Stephan: I just submitted open-vm-tools to STABLE. According to reception on this (and other lists), it would be good idea to push this package into distribution. Dominique also suggested that it should be installed (with correct kernel module) automagically when YaST detects VMware host. I talked to YaST folks and we could use following methods: a) package supplements PCI ID of VMware hardware, but this solution is not clean and requires increased maintenance b) use HAL to detect VMware hardware - much cleaner - for example, YaST detects XFS partitions and if it founds any, package xfsprogs is installed We can install packages like virtualbox-ose-guest-tools in similar fashion. PS: Subpackage vmware-kmp contains modules for vmblock, vmhgfs, vmmemctl, vmsync and vmxnet. We have some of these in autobuild*, so I'm CCing maintainers so they can review newly created package and eventually drop the old ones, if they found them obsoleted. Ann, Jiri I can add you as package co-maintainers in BuildService if you are interested. * vmware-toolsmods - Ann Davis vmware-vmxnet - Jiri Slaby vmware-wkstnmods - Ann Davis -- Best Regards / S pozdravom, Pavol RUSNAK SUSE LINUX, s.r.o Package Maintainer Lihovarska 1060/12 PGP 0xA6917144 19000 Praha 9, CR prusnak[at]suse.cz http://www.suse.cz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ah, I see. I will try to find a way using supplements then. And what about inclusion in 11.0? I know it's past alpha3, but I haven't found this mailing-list request not until Friday. -- Best Regards / S pozdravom, Pavol RUSNAK SUSE LINUX, s.r.o Package Maintainer Lihovarska 1060/12 PGP 0xA6917144 19000 Praha 9, CR prusnak[at]suse.cz http://www.suse.cz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

From http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap/11.0 I would say the deadline to bring new packages into 11.0 cycle would be on April 7 (Feature freeze of base system) or Apr 17 (Milestone: Feature and version freeze for the complete distribution), depending on where the border between base system and the rest is (I would assume open-vm-tools containing kernel modules and being targeted to be i the CD should be counted as base system).

This is great news. Now, if SaX can be "trained" to add the additional ModeLines, which vmware-config-tools.pl puts in xorg.conf to support the auto-resize feature, it will be perfect. Sunnyu, the correct video driver is automatically added already by SaX and the video mode lines actually are not needed. As far as I could see, it was ctually enough to activate 'Auto Size' in the VMWare Options and my guest was resizing the screen whenever I resize the VMWare Windows. Dominique, This does not work with Beta 3 with the vmware-kmp-pae modules installed. X recognizes the right driver and uses it, but the resize does not work. Can you confirm that it work? I think actually that would be a good idea... after all, VMWare is a high used platform for testing... and maybe we can have some RPM magic yast magic to detect WMWare running and Supplement' the RPM in this case? I know that with several other hardware devices, this works too... If nobody else did so, I can start to build some RPMs (and maintain later too) in my home: Project. A later move to some other project (until up to the base distro where it would make most sense) could then be discussed. I guess everyone is in favour of having the latest vmware working with as little effort as possible, so including the tools seems like a good idea.
