[opensuse-factory] Split devel and a "backports" project
Hallo, I've got a request from Frank to add CentOS, Mandriva and openSUSE 11.4 into Java:packages. I personally do not like this idea - J:p is intended to be a devel project for Factory. On the other hand, there might be someone will be interested and will take a care. And I don't want to block our community from that. So I am thinking about following concept 1.) create new Java:Factory project -> this will be the devel project for Factory, so only openSUSE_Factory repository will be added 2.) make project link [1] from Java:Factory - Java:???. In this project more targets can be enabled and it can have more maintainers taking a care about such distributions. 3.) the changes in Java:??? will be submitted back to :Factory. If not, then :??? project won't be synced with :Factory. This is a responsibility of those will do the change. I'm waiting on a comments, especially some nice name instead of ???, which is probably not allowed in OBS ;-) [1] http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Build_Service_Concept_project_linking Regards Michal Vyskocil

IMVHO it would be useful to also add the "last released openSUSE version" repository, so in this case 12.1, replaced by 12.2 in a few weeks. The reasoning: I guess that there are people who are willing to use / test / develop on packages of a certain area where they are knowledgeable about -- in this case Java -- but not wanting to run Factory on their main work machine. In other words: they might be happy to run unstable / bleeding edge Java stuff, since this is their area of expertise, but they might not want to run the latest unstable(?) X, Kernel, GNOME, whatever. So also having the latest released version might help them help that devel project. I personally don't care -- I run Factory anyway :-) -- Stefan Seyfried "Dispatch war rocket Ajax to bring back his body!" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

We already use devel:languages:____ for many other programming languages. Is there a reason using this would not work for Java as well? -Todd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hallo, Java got own namespace from early beggining! Maybe others languages/people loathes Java too much, they moved it into separate namespace ;-) Aren't you propose the idea of having devel:languages:java:openjdk:Factory or devel:languages:java:factory, are you? ;-) I am very happy with this particular inconsistency in a BS.
