[opensuse-factory] Call for Maintainer: KDE3
Dear Tumbleweed Hackers, It seems KDE3 is no longer getting the attention it needs in order to survive as a viable option in Tumbleweed. It's been already 4 weeks that a bunch of KDE3 related packages do no longer build in openSUSE:Factory; the notification mails that went out after one week of failed build have remained 'unanswered and without build fixes submitted' An overview of all failing KDE3 packages can be found at: https://build.opensuse.org/project/status/openSUSE:Factory?filter_devel =KDE:KDE3 Should there be interest to keep the KDE3 packages available in Tumbleweed, now would be the moment to step up and keep their pulse pumping. I'm sure there ARE users out there that wish to keep it... Unite together and get it to build again. If there is no will to get those packages fixed, we can discuss about removing them. Cheers, and happy hacking, Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Some of KDE3 packages (such as kdebase3) do not build in Factory https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/openSUSE:Factory/kdebase3 but build well in KDE:KDE3 against Factory. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/KDE:KDE3/kdebase3 There is no difference between the packages so I think this is an internal Factory's problem. This message appears if trying to build kdebase against kdelibs which were built with another version of qt3. Kdelibs has been built September, 8, Qt3 has been changed September, 14 and rebuilt September, 24 https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/330825 This means the current kdelibs3 in Factory is built against old version of Qt3. Thus the failure.

Thanks Ilya, I started to trigger a couple of those packages and this seems to go fine indeed. The K3 build system is overly nasty then though: the change in qt3 should really not require any rebuilding of any underlying things... but such are facts of life :) Cheers, Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Let me play Devil's Advocate here: why do we have KDE3 shipping in the main repository of what is supposed to be "a pure rolling release version of openSUSE containing the latest stable versions of all software"? How does a version of KDE and Qt that hasn't been the latest stable release or supported for 7 years qualify? What purpose does it serve? On switching to Tumbleweed a couple of months ago and searching for KDE apps to install I was very surprised to be confronted by unclear choices between KDE 3 and KDE 4/KF5 versions of things. The situation is confusing enough with the KDE4 / KF5 migration! Now, as a KDE dev I could unpick some of that and know what to choose, but even then I accidentally ended up with some KDE3 stuff installed. To an average user I'd suggest it's even more confusing and counter-productive, and due to a lack of security updates downright dangerous. I have no problem with a few people clinging on to an app of even the desktop by using an OBS repo, but given what I suspect is the tiny user base is it really worth the clutter and hassle and security risk of having it in the main repo? To clarify this: KDE3 isn't maintained, nor supported, by the openSUSE community KDE team. We handle the kdelibs 4.x and KF5 bits. Community members stepped up to maintain the KDE3 software (which I assume includes Trinity? I haven't been following). Personally speaking, I think it should be offered as an *add on repository* rather than being in the *main distro*. But that's just my opinion and doesn't reflect the one of the wider openSUSE community.

+1 to that. To anyone who wants to reply to this thread: *please* keep messages on KDE3 vs Plasma 4.x vs Plasma 5 *out* of this discussion. Let's limit ourselves to the feasibility of having KDE3 in the main distro. -- Luca Beltrame - KDE Forums team KDE Science supporter GPG key ID: A29D259B -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

John.
Unfortunately, some third party apps like Chrome and LSB 4.0 still pull in Qt3 and KDE3. So at least some subset of KDE3 needs to be in TW. Thanks, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

On 13.2, only Qt3 and Lsb are required (no Kde3 parts..): # zypper rm Qt3 ... Yeah, not building them is indeed helpful to avoid seeing build failures. PowerPC built kdebase3 last time August 7 and ARM on Jul 27. Greetings, Stephan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

So what? kdebase3 doesn't fail on o:Factory.
