That sounds like your graphical interface fails to actually launch (paired with a bug in gdm that does tries to respawn it to eagerly) Boot your system to single user mode (simply add '3' to the kernel command line, that still works) and extract the logs. Likely there was a kernel update in the mix for you and you need to re- install your binary graphics driver Cheers, Dominique
