[opensuse-factory] Should Google's mod_spdy be included in the distribution?
Hello, would it make sense to include Google's SPDY module for Apache 2.2 (mod_spdy)[1][2] to be included in factory (and later openSUSE 12.2)? Yes - if somebody takes care of the package. Are you volunteering, Martin? Andreas

Andreas [...] A fair question. But I am pretty sure I know too less of Apache, servers and especially of packaging to be able to be a maintainer for mod_spdy.
Maybe if I keep on learning for some package for 12.3 (and maybe I should start to test with a package that is already maintained by somebody else). Sorry Martin -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Don't worry too much about that in first place... I'd say: if you can read the INSTALL file, manage to build and install a module, then you can build a package. the .spec file is not much more than a collection of shell commands after all to get the right things done in the right order. Additionally, most apache2 modules are not that difficult to package up. Have a look at https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=apache2-mod_dnssd.spec&package=apache2-mod_dnssd&project=openSUSE%3AFactory&rev=5ec53bb70760755e9c8ec049ecdb4afb Very likely only few adjustments needed for this to work (it's a configure / make / make install style install). If you have questions / troubles with packaging, shout on opensuse-packaging@ and we'll get you started. You (pl.)/We would need an other one maintaining Google's SPDY module for Apache 2.2 for 12.2/factory if it should be included. If I would start packaging I would not begin with a package that will be part of the official distribution. And especially in a area where I would be able to test the result - as I have no (Apache) server installed I rate it a very bad idea to begin with a package like that. Thanks, Dominique, for the link and for making your tutorial - I will have a look at it and have a thought at packaging something like a (already existing) driver according to my hardware or alike. Martin, I did have a look at spdy during the weekend. Once the 'google build system' is understood (and also the fact that not everything is in the svn repository, but needs to be collected by the 'google crawler' called, Chromium Depot Tools, it is not all that bad anymore. There is currently a patched apache2 in home:dimstar and also a apache2-mod_spdy, which should add spdy support. By default, spdy is very defensive and needs to be enabled as a module and also using apache conf directive SpdyEnabled on; due to the 'beta stage' of the module, the default is non enabled in the upstream code base. If anybody can give this a test and see if this really works, would be great :) (beware: spdy is an extension to https only! it does not do anything on non-https sites. M{i,a}ster Darix just made me aware of another missing component: openSSL needs to be either patched or updated. For Factory, an update to 1.0.1 (which is the first version to carry the needed fix upstream) might still be viable, but it being openSSL is of course tricky :) Any comments on this or even plans to update openSSL to 1.0.1 for Factory? Then the inclusion of mod_spdy might be possible... If not, then there is little reason in shipping mod_spdy: the apache patch is guarded with version checks on openssl. I am not so sure that this is a load balancer problem, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=138103&p=1 Regards. -- Ismail Dönmez - openSUSE Booster SUSE LINUX Products GmbH Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I see... good not to be the first ones in this case :) So if we want mod_spdy, then we should discuss if we want the NPN patch in our openssl package (and probably a small modification on the apache patch, as that one currently checks for openSSL versions). Of: we agree not to ship mod_spdy, considering it not 'ready' is a valid option too (We can target it for 12.3 in this case).
