[opensuse-factory] 11.2 sound
Hey openSuSE factory; I have version 11.2 and KDE. The problem is why does SuSE make all sound devices fail to work for users? I have tried kradio with root and it works as a user it fails. Skype, amarok and kdetv all fail as a user. I did get amarok using Yast2 rpms to work with amarok-xine and yauap (which fails to hold the volume correctly on startup). I have even set permissions to 666 on /dev/dsp and for Skype a entry in /etc/services. Kradio complains about no dev/radio as a user. Kdetv fails for root and a user. And Yast2 did setup the TV Card and radio. Not to mention xine blows up on a mounted known good non encrypted movie DVD " mount /dev/sr0 /media/sr0 " -- 73 de Donn Washburn 307 Savoy Street Email:" n5xwb@windstream.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 LL# 1.281.242.3256 Ham Callsign N5XWB HAMs : " n5xwb@arrl.net " VoIP via Gizmo: bmw_87kbike / via Skype: n5xwbg BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador " http://counter.li.org " #279316 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I was at 11.2 M1 a few days ago and everything was fine. zypper dup done last night and now kmix comes up blank, Skype only has sound device options of HDMI. It looks like the latest alsa updates suck BIG TIME. I'll do a reboot and see if it straightens out, but Don Washburn has done lots of those with same results. I shall file a bug after I've rebooted. # cat /etc/SuSE-release openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 1 (x86_64) VERSION = 11.2 # lsmod|grep snd snd_usb_audio 101664 0 snd_usb_lib 20144 1 snd_usb_audio snd_pcm_oss 49296 0 snd_mixer_oss 19440 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_seq_midi 9152 0 snd_emu10k1_synth 8096 0 snd_emux_synth 41568 1 snd_emu10k1_synth snd_seq_virmidi 8032 1 snd_emux_synth snd_seq_midi_event 9232 2 snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_virmidi snd_seq_midi_emul 7456 1 snd_emux_synth snd_seq 64960 5 snd_seq_midi,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_event,snd_seq_midi_emul snd_emu10k1 161568 1 snd_emu10k1_synth snd_rawmidi 27456 4 snd_usb_lib,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_emu10k1 snd_ac97_codec 128520 1 snd_emu10k1 ac97_bus 2560 1 snd_ac97_codec snd_seq_device 9396 6 snd_seq_midi,snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi snd_util_mem 5968 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1 snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi 4384 1 snd_hda_codec_analog 80256 1 snd_hda_intel 30872 0 snd_hda_codec 82144 3 snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi,snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_hda_intel snd_hwdep 10136 4 snd_usb_audio,snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_codec snd_pcm 97496 6 snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_oss,snd_emu10k1,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec snd_timer 27224 3 snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm snd 82312 20 snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_emul,snd_seq,snd_emu10k1,snd_rawmidi,snd_ac97_codec,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_analog,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 9440 1 snd snd_page_alloc 11136 3 snd_emu10k1,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm usbcore 210384 14 snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,usb_storage,usblp,pic18bl,hid_sony,uvcvideo,pl2303,usbhid,btusb,usbserial,ohci_hcd,ehci_hcd Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... Elaborate which update broke it. "the latest alsa updates" doesn't clearly explain which package you updated from which repo. The possible scenario, judging from your description, is that HDMI is detected as the primary device, and the rest devices weren't loaded because of the slot conflict. Try to remove /etc/modprobe.d/*sound file once. Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

OK, I did a reboot and sound is now OK. Last night I did a zypper dup and this morning when I checked skype, the only option was HDMI, rcalsasound restart loaded the correct modules, but skype came up the same and kmix was blank. This morning I did another zypper dup, nothing for alsa installed. So, it seems a reboot was necessary after zypper dup - kmix is also fine now. Everything is set as it should be without *-sound.rules file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... No, using the inbuilt sound card snd-hda-intel and standard VGA connection to the monitor - haven't tried the HDMI connection so far, but have been thinking about it. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... On 11.2, you might have two outputs for HD-audio, one for on-board and one for HDMI while Intel HDMI wasn't supported on 11.1. HDMI often appears as an individual sound card, you may have two snd-intel-hdmi instances now. OTOH, you have only one snd-inte-hdmi entry in slots definition in the module config. Then one of the instance will be moved to another slot. So, check /proc/asound/cards after the boot. If you have more entries than slots definition, add it properly to slots definition.
