Firefox didn't have previous functionality to live up to.
Sorry, I don't buy into this, Linda. You're throwing out red herrings.

You call this easier or simpler?
Faster to execute -- yes, easier to understand, maintain, develop-for -- certainly not to anyone who knows shell. Maybe after it's been round and become a standard for 'N years', but doesn't look alot like shell scripts that have run the OS (including 1970's shell scripts for unix) for the past 40+ years.
Then I said: ************************************
But you know, this is all really a red-herring to me.
yeah, it is a red herring to me. I want basics:
I want basic boot-from-disk functionality back. The fact that it CAN'T do that is the most serious and crippling limitation in my mind. The fact that 'S' isn't "before anything runs -- but is dependent on some 'systemd' "target" only **EMPHASIZES** the problem. The idea of 'S' was to get in before the *control* service started (as an example).
We've lost the ability to break things down.
Because of that you have to require a ram-disk to bundle all the "/etc/init.d/boot.d" operations onto the ramdisk.
The requirements of this solution are onerous and debilitating.
The only thoughts about maintaining backwards compatibility have been about denying it is supported or sabotaging it (by moving everything to /usr).
I already pointed to my biggest issue. The systemd writer said to optimize boot get rid of initrd. I did that, and my system booted in half the time. Now you want me to go back to that. No thanks. If it is systemd's advice to not use initrd to optimize boot... why is suse disabling the ability to optimize boot? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

On the contrary. Firefox was a lighter weight reduced function spin-off from the Mozilla Suite. Instead of being a full featured browser, it was stripped of many the Mozilla Suite browser's features and equipped with the concept of extensions that those who wished to regain lost functionality could utilize to restore them, and add others. Hold on to your hats, because Firefox 23 is going to lose even more traditional functionality. More dumbing down is on its way, e.g.: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851702 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=851701 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=855370 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Right, so much more "sanity" that I'll need 6 Geckos running per system instead of 5, due to more loss of function during Firefox's evolution: 1-2.0.0.20 (pre-258875) 2-3.6.28 (pre-537890) 3-last version preceding 522370 "fix" 4-latest release 5-alpha/beta testing 6-SeaMonkey (for browser function not possible or facilitated in FF, plus integrated email) -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." AFAICS all the three bugs above only remove easy to use UI from the preferences. All of them can still be set using about:config or similar. So at least these three shouldn't be critical for you. Dunno about that for 855370 at least.
