I'm considering buying one of the newer Lenovo Thinkpad T series notebooks. It would be great that we include the Gobi loader in the official repo. Can we not get an "out of the box" installation working for the Thinkpad series? How is it that Ubuntu can have special cds that are certified just for these notebooks? We were able to get full support for Samsung. Can we do this for the Thinkpads? Cheers! If someone wants to work on the little tweaks it takes to get these machines to work properly, great, we will gladly accept patches and package submissions. But asking others to do the work isn't going to happen because it would require someone buying the hardware for the other person to do the work. With Samsung, that was different in that we worked with Samsung to provide support for the machine, for the MeeGo product they shipped. Same goes for the HP preloaded machines SUSE ships SLE11 on. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Why the Windows partition? How about a 1 click script that will download the driver from Qualcomm, extract the firmware and install the firmware. I don't see what the issue is doing it that way so long as none of Qualcomm's firmware is included. Even better would be to bundle it, IMO. Does qualcomm provide a download link to the firmware anywhere? For ThinkPads, the biggest problem is to extract the firmware images from the Windows executable provided by Lenovo. You need wine or a Windows installation (see the ThinkWiki article mentioned in this thread). The kernel-firmware package only includes firmware bundles that we are legally allowed to distribute. The qualcom firmware is not able to be distributed at all, last time we asked. And, it's different depending on the carrier that you are using, so be careful in getting the correct firmware, otherwise it might not work properly. Novell did ship one preloaded machine with this firmware, but we were specifically allowed to ship the firmware only on that one machine model, and only for one specific carrier, in one specific country. Despite our best efforts, they would not allow us to do anything else, which of course meant we can not add it to the openSUSE repo :( sorry, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Well, I think the most crucial part is selecting UMTS or CDMA. And for UMTS, there is a generic firmware. If someone is interested in, the qualcomm presentation[1] mentions many operator specific things. E.g.: * AT access is disabled for DoCoMo image * Preferred roaming lists are included in the image * aGPS IP address/port are stored in the image * optional default values for SMS service, APNs, usernames and passwords Furthermore, some internal firmware names[0] contain "nogps" or "noxtra", while XTRA is sth like aGPS, both are mentioned in the presentation[1]. Thus, in case of UMTS, GPS and basic data transfer should work using the generic firmware image.
