Hi, all of a sudden sound has stopped working on my laptop. I'm on TW 20210830, I already tried going back several snapshots all the way to 20210827, didn't help. Any ideas? the funny part is that yesterday evening, and this morning before the last "tumbleweed upgrade" which was from 20210829 to 20210830 sound worked "just fine". And just to be sure I dualbooted to windows just now, sound works there - so its not the hardware... Google reveals something to do with firmware. where someone on gentoo had a similar issue a year ago, and then solved it but didn't tell the rest of the people how. Any ideas for me? Cheers MH

Not that I'm sure I can help but a starting point would be some more info from alsa/pulseaudio. run pa-info or even better LANG=C pa-info | susepaste -t "pa-info" -e "10080" -- /bengan

Mathias, Sorry, multiple typos in the my previous msg....here's the corrected version... For me sound stopped working in my TW virtual machine (host runs Win 10 normally but also has TW installed) after I updated from 20210805 to 20210820. I figured it would be fixed quickly but I have since updated to 20210826 and 20210827 and it is still NOT working. Interestingly, if I boot the host machine to TW (host has Win10 and TW installed) then when I update it from 20210805 to each of those versions sound continued to work on the host machine running TW. Sound also works fine when the host is booted to Win10 and sound works fine in other VMs, it is just the TW vm that is broke. If I boot the TW vm to the 20210805 read/only snapshot then sound works for it again but as soon as I boot back to 20210820, 20210826, or 20210827 then sound stops working again. I'm still looking for a solution.... Joe

run pa-info

run as root, as regular user, from inside the DE, from a shell without DE? here: https://paste.opensuse.org/34861552 is a run as root through ssh from the outside. Is the previous kernel available for boot in the Grub? Looks like your card module is broken since that update. On 2021-09-02 15:08, Mathias Homann wrote:

Mathias, Any luck getting it to work? Today I updated my TW vm from 20210827 to 20210831 and the sound problems is still there. If I reboot to the TW 20210805 r/o snapshot then sound works again but booting back to 20210831 and it is broken again. One difference between 20210805 and then newer builds where I have having the problem is that when I run "aplay -l" on 20210805 it lists "Pulse Audio Sound Server" but when run on the newer builds it says "PipeWire Sound Server" Sounds like something was broken during that conversion. If I run "hwinfo --sound" when 20210831 is booted I get 34: PCI 202.0: 0401 Multimedia audio controller [Created at pci.386] Unique ID: LHB6.FGsk7T8RAT9 Parent ID: 7EWs.3XzZP_1GzlF SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:11.0/0000:02:02.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:02:02.0 Hardware Class: sound Device Name: "sound" Model: "Ensoniq Audio PCI 64V/128/5200 / Creative CT4810/CT5803/CT5806 [Sound Blaster PCI]" Vendor: pci 0x1274 "Ensoniq" Device: pci 0x1371 "ES1371/ES1373 / Creative Labs CT2518" SubVendor: pci 0x1274 "Ensoniq" SubDevice: pci 0x1371 "Audio PCI 64V/128/5200 / Creative CT4810/CT5803/CT5806 [Sound Blaster PCI]" Revision: 0x02 Driver: "snd_ens1371" Driver Modules: "snd_ens1371" I/O Ports: 0x1000-0x1fff (rw) IRQ: 16 (13946 events) Module Alias: "pci:v00001274d00001371sv00001274sd00001371bc04sc01i00" Driver Info #0: Driver Status: snd_ens1371 is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe snd_ens1371" Config Status: cfg=yes, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #46 (PCI bridge) If I run pa-info as my user I get ________________

Mathias,
Any luck getting it to work?
... yep. after unloading the driver, rm /var/lib/alsa/asound.state && systemctl reboot. o.0 that was all it needed here... Mathias, Hmmm... that didn't work for me but I think I got to the root of the issue. There was in issue in one of the updates after 210200805 (probably 20210820 since that was the next one I installed) that mistakenly installed the pattern microos-desktop-common which was supposedly fixed the next day. It looks like that changed from using pulseaudio to pipewire. What I did to fix the problem was to reinstall pulseaudio. When I did that zypper responded with Problem: the installed pipewire-pulseaudio-0.3.34-1.1.x86_64 conflicts with 'pulseaudio' provided by the to be installed pulseaudio-15.0-2.1.x86_64 Solution 1: Following actions will be done: deinstallation of pipewire-pulseaudio-0.3.34-1.1.x86_64 deinstallation of patterns-microos-desktop-common-5.0-36.1.x86_64 Solution 2: do not install pulseaudio-15.0-2.1.x86_64 Choosing option 1 removed the pattern that TW erroneously installed and after rebooting audio was working again.

Any ideas? What info do you guys need to help figuring this out?
Not that I'm sure I can help but a starting point would be some more info from alsa/pulseaudio.
run pa-info
or even better LANG=C pa-info | susepaste -t "pa-info" -e "10080"

Mathias, For me sound stopped working in my TW virtual machine (which runs Win 10) after I updated from 20210805 to 20210820. I figured it would be fixed quickly but I have since updated to 20210826 and 20210827 and it is still now working. Interestingly, if I boot the host machine to TW then when I updated it from 20210805 to each of those versions sound continued to work on the host machine. Sound works fine when the host is booted to Win10 and sound works fine in other VMs, it is just the TW vm that is broke. If I boot the TW vm to the 20210805 read/only snapshot then sound works for it again but as soon as I boot back to 20210820, 20210826, or 20210827 then sound stops working again. I'm still looking for a solution.... Joe
