[opensuse-factory] Noto font misses dot over Ukrainian і in interface
Hi, After recent update all fonts of Noto family (Noto Sans, Noto Serif, etc) miss dot over Cyrillic і which is widely used in Ukrainian (and Belarusian) so text now looks ugly. And that problem present in interface of both Qt and Gtk applications, QtWebEngine, Chromium, FireFox and doesn't depend on text size. But if open font file (/usr/share/fonts/truetype/NotoSans-Regular.ttf) with FontForge or KFontView dot is where it should be. Other chars or fonts (Google and not) aren't affected as far as I see, but that's not sure. At least English i and Ukrainian ї both fine in Noto. -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський
Hi, I'm understanding that there are a few person who uses Ukrainian on openSUSE and reading this mail-list. But maybe other people could at least say do they see a dot over this symbol: "і" in Noto Sans font? And what may be the reason of missing dot in real use on every size (from 9 to 72) but present in font viewer… AFAIK, hinting error could not lead to this, it possible be on small sizes but not big like 72 (at 144dpi). Maybe some counterclockwise/clockwise rules like in OpenGL front/back sides? -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський
Hi Maybe it's bug in recent freetype. On 2017-11-15 19:58, Mykola Krachkovsky wrote:

Maybe it's bug in recent freetype.
This can be directly tested with, say, `ftview'. Werner

ftview shows dot. As well as kfontview. So font file itself and freetype seem fine. But everywhere in interface there is no dot. Maybe there is some configuration problem? Some font substitution? But where and why it was OK until Noto font update? Here are some images. Nevertheless problem is in font or its interpretation. If I edit font with FontForge and remove glyph substitution rule 'ccmp' Glyph Composition/Decomposition in Cyrillic lookup 8 subtable which replaces with dotless і — afii10103dotless font becomes ok. So what is the problem: this substitution rule or its interpretation? I'm not familiar with TrueType/OpenType well. Should I make bugreport to Google or FreeType? Or it's better to write to FreeType-devel mail-list (I'm already registered there) with question? -- Kind regards, Mykola Krachkovsky -- Найкращі побажання, Микола Крачковський
