[opensuse-factory] YaST Qt 11.0 Beta 1
Icons Hardware Section: I looked for Graphic Card and Monitor and first icon that caught my attention was actually TV card setup. The present Graphic Card and Monitor is for sure far from giving idea that it is graphic setup. Maybe adding something that mimics speakers under the screen would be better for TV, and plain monitor image as it is now for TV to use for Graphic Card and Monitor. Printer image is now almost hidden behind button that should represent what? The old icon was clear for me. I see the problem with fingerprint reader too, that can be confused with general security setup, but this icon is for sure better than the old one that was accurate as device image, but too similar to Scanner. The Infrared icon looks promising as wireless setup to me, just paint waves blue and that's it. How to present infrared, I'm not sure, I haven't seen any external infrared receivers for computers, and those for headphones resembling to current icon. We would probably need under network devices something as wireless setup icon, wired setup. It can call the same network card setup focused to different tab. Present layout brings 3 devices and then Network Settings, implying that something is missing. It is actually the same case as Graphic Card. Module is the same, but entry point focus is different. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe you should say what icon set you're using. There are actually 3. Greetings, Stephan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I didn't know that there is 3rd set. The current setup in VirtualBox is update from Factory (updated from Alpha3). I wanted to try update first, and it went fine with minor glitch that I had to shut down manually, but after reboot it booted in new installed system. It hung probably on shutdown, as I haven't seen 'replying transaction' messages. After login in KDE4 I started YaST to setup screen, and comments are made about that. I guess that Martin has right about icons. Many of them are new to me, so it seems oxygen would be the answer. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I guess you're using the oxygen-theme. Keep in mind that no real artist is working on that. It's just a selection of existing icons from the upstream oxygen project. I plan to update it and "optimize" it for 11.0 one of these days, and will try to address your criticism.

Actually the sax2 icon is a tango icon that "made the cut". So this is not specific to the oxygen theme nor to 11.0.
Printer image is now almost hidden behind button that should represent what? The old icon was clear for me.
The "gear" represents "configuration". Maybe it's better to just use a plain printer.

Infrared icon is also reused tango icon - hence same situation with tango theme and 10.3. I'll see what I can do. But I kind of doubt that it'll ever be possible to navigate yast control center perfectly solely by looking at the icons without reading any of the accompanying text. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Not really criticism, at least not how I understand the word. Somehow in my mind criticism is always prepended with 'unproductive', which I'm trying to avoid.

The big black X with orange circle?

It is. I'm in YaST because I want to configure something, so the device picture or something that resembles on function should be enough.

It's probably, just me. It resembles so much on antenna. Red waves don't help me much not to think twice, and that is not from yesterday. I just never found that it is important to comment.

I wrote once that icons are actually pretty useless when is so many of them. Many terms is not possible to present with single picture, to many similar images are there to be remembered, and that basically defeats their main purpose, easier navigation, but users are used to see them and openSUSE can't go against the main stream, so all we can do is to make them as intuitive as possible, for majority. I would like that everybody takes time and comment on them now, not after everything is frozen. For instance, helmet for security is for me very intuitive. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
