I have not sufficient knowledge to be able to choose between 'bad' and 'not bad'
A bad one does not have a line that starts with "nameserver".
After configuration SSID SpeedTouch D17287 with the WPA PSK code I got from the provider and where I found that kernel module ath5K played a role I got from iwconfig:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
I have the feeling that I'm still missing some smal trick
You have not associated/authenticated with the Access Point. My suggestion about resolv.conf assumed that you had. Please check the output of dmesg for messages regarding your wireless device. Does it need firmware? Please post the section of the output of 'lspci -nnk' that describes your device.
I do not understand your comments about WPA PSK code from the manufacturer and then ath5k.

To help with the solution of this problem, please go to http://www.linux-tips-and-tricks.de/index.php/ and download the script named collectNMData.sh. Disconnect the wire to your Ethernet connection, then run the script. The output should help you discover the problem. AFAIK, the version of ath5k in RC2 is OK. I don't have such a device, but I have not seen a lot of complaints. Larry It's easier to configure with KNetworkmanager was the advise. Doing so I see: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter App name: wlan0 Automatic start at startup IP address with DHCP
Dynamic IP address DHCP both versions 4 and 6 ESSID: SpeedTouch...... verification modus WPA-PSK (WPA version 1 or 2) Key input type Passwordway Encryption code .......... Any Hints?
