Christoph-Erdmann Pfeiler <christoph-erdmann.pfeiler@gmx.de> 01/10/09 2:40 PM >>> Gentle readers,
I've got a strange "unknown error" during an installation attempt as well as an update attempt of an existing openSuSE 11.0 system to 11.1. The previous update from 10.3 to 11.0 worked nearly flawlessly, exept for the Lilo installation, which required some online tweaking, id est reverting to the old version of lilo.conf with new kernel names. The technical update procedure was the same as described below. The Yast2 in the 11.0->11.1 update attempt, as well as the installation attempt reports an unknown error - could not access storage device message during his respective attempt to read the partition table. Please look into the appended y2log file for more information, as well fstab and mdadm.conf for information about my system. After the (graphical) error message, I accessed the text console tty2, where I could see that the md devices were not recognised. A manual mdadm --assemble --scan worked, but created somehow strange md devices, md126 and md127, the high numbers beeing really strange. These md devices could be mounted and showed their proper content, but could not be accesed by the updating or installing procedure of the YaST2 11.1. My boot environment is: - SuSE 11.1 PXE server, - linux and initrd from DVD1:/boot/i386/loader by tftp, - content of DVD by NFS The system does not posess a bootable CD or DVD drive! After PXE linux loading, kernel, initrd and file 1 to 6 loading, a complaint of a missing CD1 occurs. I've seen a complaint of a missing file 8 in a log - is this an additional driver file? After the initial error message, that no "CD1" is present, the text YaST2 allows the choice of NFS based installation, DHCP is selected, message "no driver update" is answered by [OK], the graphical user interface fails with the final error independent of choice "update" or "installation". The graphical interface stalls if "continue" is chosen and terminates if "cancel" is chosen. Thank You for Your patience reading until here, through this technical stuff! Thank You for any useful input!
