[opensuse-factory] Some questions about Tumbleweed
This question I have already asked but don't recall what the answer was so am therefore asking again (with an apology if you find it a repetition): will Tumbleweed ever find its place in the sun with its own name in GRUB MENU or will it be forever a number instead of a name (eg, 20151030)? And as an adjunct to this question: will discussions/questions re Tumbleweed forever be consigned to the FACTORY mail list? Next question. I have the latest Tumbleweed installed (or rather TW upgraded to the latest release as of yesterday). Now TW has been going for quite some time and is not "a new kid on the block" but the only repositories it has to its name showing in YaST are: * download.opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed * download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss * download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss and when you go and try and ADD repositories the only COMMUNITY repositories available are: * Main Repository (Sources) * Main Repository (DEBUG) On the other hand, openSUSE 13.2 (and earlier) have a host of Community repositories available such as Packman, libdvdcss, Games, et al -- but Tumbleweed has zilch (aka zero, nil, nothing). I make much use of VLC (from videolan.org) to watch digital television on my computer (my wife can watch whatever SHE likes on the big screen in the lounge :-) ) as well as watch DVD films. I also like to play some games included in Pysol. But neither vlc nor Pysol are available in Tumbleweed. The question therefore is: why is Tumbleweed so bereft of Community repositories when they are, and have been for years, available in versions of openSUSE? The blurb about Tumbleweed in the wiki (or whatever) extols Tumbleweed as the "bleeding edge" of openSUSE. But this would appear to be an overstatement when one cannot play all the games available or view DVDs or TV when the means to do so are available in the "plain Jane" versions of openSUSE. (And before you jump in Patrick with your comment I will preempt it by stating that that is not the point -- the repos should be THERE, showing in YaST, so that first time users of Tumbleweed can access them instead of having to jump on one leg at midnight while holding the innards of a cockerel in their left hand while trying to type a post to Factory asking about missing repositories with their right hand [reverse, of course, for left-handed people].) Thank you, Jimmy, for your response. See my response to Gour. I do not see the need for "the normal mechanisms for discovery ( ie google, wiki, obs)..." to be used by anyone, but most of all a first time user of something like Tumbleweed, to find repositories and programs to make a distro (?)fully functional. Every release of openSUSE proper and kosher itself has (?)always had a full list of repositories showing in YasT under the Community label -- so why not Tumbleweed which has been around for zonks, ie it is not a "new kid on the block". Why has it's functionality been jeopardised and neglected? JFYI: The list of the repositories is not hardcoded in YaST, the openSUSE maintainers should be able to add more repositories. The list of the repositories is actually defined at http://download.opensuse.org/YaST/Repos/_openSUSE_Factory_Default.xml Some technical details: This XML file is actually linked in from http://download.opensuse.org/YaST/Repos/openSUSE_Factory_Servers.xml which is defined at https://github.com/yast/skelcd-control-openSUSE/blob/master/control/control.... which is stored at /etc/YaST2/control.xml in the installed system. So there is a chain of the XML files defined on the server, the only hardcoded part is the entry point stored in the /etc/YaST2/control.xml file. Fixing the repository list does not require any change in YaST and can be done on the server side... -- Ladislav Slezák Appliance department / YaST Developer Lihovarská 1060/12 190 00 Prague 9 / Czech Republic tel: +420 284 028 960 lslezak@suse.com SUSE -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I'm not sure what are you complaining about? Issuing 'opensuse additional repositories' query gives here (as 1st hit) the following page: https://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositor ies There are some interesting informations... This is a list of currently existing *third-party repositories*, meaning they're external to openSUSE. These packages are not supported by openSUSE, the packages may not be tested and the repositories can contain beta versions and other bleeding edge packages. * For official repositories (OSS, non-OSS, Update, Update-Non-OSS) and semi official repositories (including KDE, GNOME and Java repositories) see Package repositories. * For information on how to add package repositories see Add package repositories. * For new Linux and openSUSE users it is recommended to use the 4 default repositories (OSS, Non-OSS, Update, Update-Non-OSS) and Packman. Later on when you familiarize yourself with package management you can add more. * Please, make sure that you actually need a specific repository instead of blindly adding it. More repositories means more complexity in software management and needs some experience to avoid problems and, in extreme cases, system failure. Warning Use it at your own risk." Moreover, there are clean instructions (copy & paste) how to add additional repos, but it's not true that that without Packman openSUSE is not functional...and I was advised even by some openSUSE devs to use http://software.opensuse.org/codecs for Multimedia. See also: https://en.opensuse.org/Package_repositories page. Aww, don't spoil the argument! :-D . When you go to the openSUSE site to download the latest and bestest openSUSE creations you are given the choice of downloading Leap (of Faith) or Tumbleweed- https://www.opensuse.org/ There both are in full 'technicolour' glory: Download, install and enjoy with the URL announcing: "The makers' choice for sysadmins, developers and desktop users." Correct.
"The makers' choice for sysadmins, developers and desktop users."
And if you click on Tumbleweed there is button with 'Learn more' where it is written: "Any user who wishes to have newer packages than are available in the openSUSE 13.2 repositories. So, we appreciate your effort to move to Linux from Mac/Windows, but, otoh, one has to be aware there are Linux distributions which are tailored to less-experienced Linux users as well as to developers. There is e.g. Debian Stable which has a bit older software, but everything is working and there is Debian Sid which is meant for those who can recover from system breakages. Next question.
I have the latest Tumbleweed installed (or rather TW upgraded to the latest release as of yesterday). Now TW has been going for quite some time and is not "a new kid on the block" but the only repositories it has to its name showing in YaST are:
* download.opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed

* download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss
and when you go and try and ADD repositories the only COMMUNITY repositories available are:
* Main Repository (Sources)
* Main Repository (DEBUG)
On the other hand, openSUSE 13.2 (and earlier) have a host of Community repositories available such as Packman, libdvdcss, Games, et al -- but Tumbleweed has zilch (aka zero, nil, nothing).
I make much use of VLC (from videolan.org) to watch digital television on my computer (my wife can watch whatever SHE likes on the big screen in the lounge :-) ) as well as watch DVD films. I also like to play some games included in Pysol. But neither vlc nor Pysol are available in
Tumbleweed.
I've got these in my list, is this what you mean? http://download.videolan.org/pub/vlc/SuSE/Tumbleweed/ http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/ but i think this one needs updating from factory to tumbleweed http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Frameworks5/openSUSE_Factory
(And before you jump in Patrick with your comment I will preempt it by stating that that is not the point -- the repos should be THERE, showing in YaST, so that first time users of Tumbleweed can access them instead of having to jump on one leg at midnight while holding the innards of a cockerel in their left hand while trying to type a post to Factory asking about missing repositories with their right hand [reverse, of course, for left-handed people].)

I have the latest Tumbleweed installed (or rather TW upgraded to the latest release as of yesterday). Now TW has been going for quite some time and is not "a new kid on the block" but the only repositories it has to its name showing in YaST are:
* download.opensuse.org/update/tumbleweed
* download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/oss
* download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/repo/non-oss
and when you go and try and ADD repositories the only COMMUNITY repositories available are:
* Main Repository (Sources)
* Main Repository (DEBUG)

One could use common sense, if one had... If I look at a repo URL like <http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/13.2>, my mind tells my fingers to leave the last part of the URL away and try the first part, until .../suse/ that is. I put the remaining URL in the appropriate place of my browser and look at the display of the results. So I discover the proper URL. BTW, this works with other repos as well :) That's at least the way I proceed before doing a dist-upgrade: check all URLs whether they are available for my new version or not. If they are, I change the URL, if not, I disable the repo. If I search for certain software, I always try <http://software.opensuse.org> first. When the software is available via OBS, I often use the one-click-installation, because the repo stays in my list. In case of VLC, I usually have a look at <http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/> first. I once hat problems with the packman version of VLC, so I rather stay with the "official" repos. Werner, how many years have you been using openSUSE, or some other Linux distro? Are you someone who has been using Windows or Apple OS and decided to switch to Linux and you - fortunately or otherwise - decided to try Tumbleweed which is (or is it?) an openSUSE distro? Indulge me and let's say that you are a Windows user who wants to try Tumbleweed. You download the DVD iso and install it. Fine. But you are used to viewing movies on DVD discs and so you try to do so. What happens? Zilch. Nothing. Zero. Nada. What to do? On the other hand, you decide -- as a Windows user -- to try Linux and install Ubuntu and want to play a movie on a DVD. What happens? User Support questions regarding both Tumbleweed and Leap should be directed to the opensuse@ list and/or the forums Questions regarding the development of both Tumbleweed and Leap should be directed to this opensuse-factory list. As Tumbleweed users and feedback often overlaps with possible direction of development of Tumbleweed, I think it's acceptable if the division I paint above is seen as somewhat flexible and open to interpretation To provide concrete examples, I feel questions like "how do I partition on Tumbleweed?" shouldn't be in opensuse-factory@, but questions like "can we change partitioning in Tumbleweed to do $foo?" most certainly are. While the name opensuse-factory@ is not perfect, it's no more incorrect than opensuse@ when there is no longer a distribution being made called 'openSUSE'. If we were going to rename this list to anything, I would recommend we rename it to opensuse-development@ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
