Switching off compositing visiting that page again didn't crash. These sort of problems when graphics memory is used up have a long history with my graphics card (a Radeon 9550 aka RV350), but it used to be the case that just the card crashes briefly (display freezes or goes blank for a second) and was then revived by the watchdog on the card. That this sort of thing can now take down the kernel is a new thing.
