[opensuse-factory] Proper way to install ATI drivers? 11.1 b5
I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.1 b5 and I want to test it with the proprietary ATI drivers in 3D compiz mode to see how things work. This is the first time I've run a beta version. In the past I've always either compiled the rpms from the ATI installer or done the one-click install (as per the instructions here http://en.opensuse.org/ATI). Neither of those techniques appear to be viable in this case and so I'm wondering what the "official" method would be? First just try activating compiz using radeonhd drivers, it might just work. http://dev.compiz-fusion.org/~cyberorg/2008/09/29/compiz-without-fglrx-on-op... Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. When I try and "Enable desktop effects", I get a dialog saying my hardware isn't supported. Here is the related portion of the xorg.conf. I manually added the "DRI" option but still no luck. ---- Section "Device" BoardName "Mobility Radeon HD 2600" Driver "radeonhd" Identifier "Device[0]" Option "DRI" "1" ... -- John Lange www.johnlange.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Try the following as normal user: SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz-manager --replace&

I assume you restarted X after doing that.

I'm guessing a segfault isn't the desired result? ;) Here is the output: ~> SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz-manager --replace& [1] 5256 johnlange@linux-g5pm:~> which: no kwin in (/home/johnlange/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib64/jvm/jre/bin:/usr/lib/mit/bin:/usr/lib/mit/sbin) which: no fusion-icon in (/home/johnlange/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib64/jvm/jre/bin:/usr/lib/mit/bin:/usr/lib/mit/sbin) Checking for Xdmx: not present. Yes. Rebooted actually just to be sure. -- John Lange www.johnlange.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Not a desired result at all :) you would need to install kernel development pattern, kernel-source package, download ATI drivers and build them manually or wait till they appear in repository. Well if radeonhd drivers with compiz support is supposed to be the default for 11.1 maybe some work could be done to fix this? Should I file a bug report? -- John Lange www.johnlange.ca -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Nope, radeonhd is still on compiz blacklist as it is not fully supported yet, SKIP_CHECKS just bypassed that. Ciao -J -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
