[opensuse-factory] Alpha 2 won't install on PPC (iMAC)
Doing a network install on iMAC G5 (PPC), after setting up network and FTP data, screen shows "Loading Installation System". Once loaded and booted, hundreds of lines of errors similar to: "/usr/lib/YaST2/startup/common/logging.sh: cut: command not found" and "/sbin/inst_setup: line 270: awk: command not found" Install aborts at this point. No opportunity to set up alternate logging (e.g. to network) so logs not available to attach. Same machine runs 10.3 OK-ish (at least the installation works!) This might be because the installation system has been split into two parts: 'common' and 'root' both should be available on the network-installation repository. Binaries 'cut' and 'awk' are (probably?) part of the 'common' piece of installation. I had the very same issue unless I made a complete copy of the inst-sys-images directory. Steffen, is that correct? Network repository is loop-mounted DVD alpha-2 image, this certainly has under /boot/ppc files 'root' and 'common' both containing squashfs file-systems. Target machine only has CD (not DVD) in common with other early iMACs.
Steffen, is that correct?

You have to boot from an alpha2 CD. Older (e.g., alpha1, boot media will not work). Steffen --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ah, that will be why - I didn't expect that to be the problem. Will try again with an alpha2 CD when I get the chance (probably not until tomorrow). Hmm, link on download page is broken (404) http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0-Alpha2/iso/cd/openSUSE-11.0-A... - because this file's not there ( and I can't see anything else useful for ppc ?) at http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.0-Alpha2/iso/cd/ - now I remember why I wasn't using an alpha-2 boot CD.
Is there any way of flagging / detecting this sort of change in advance?

Hi All (Steffen?) Is there any progress on this please? It makes testing pretty hard! Also, I note that the MD5 sums of the DVDs are again missing, though I appreciate that torrent clients and applydeltarpm both manage to check them (not sure how?) - please can we have them anyway? -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Sorry, no idea. You may want to make a bugreport or talk to coolo (@novell.com) directly. Hi All (Steffen?)
Is there any progress on this please? It makes testing pretty hard! You can use factory's mini ISO to boot alpha2.

Thanks - but I can't find a mini ISO in factory? (e.g. at .../distribution/SL-OSS-factory/) - though somewhere I found a note saying that there were instructions to build one (but no such document). Clearly, in the light of the recent changes to the installation boot process it does need to be very recent :-( Please can anyone provide a link? -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Install completes fine now - thanks Coolo & Bjorn - bug closed. I still have a problem booting it though - started a new thread for that. -- Cheers Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
