Well, I ran 10.0 trough 10.3 without major troubles, so I think the machine itself is not the first suspect. But in general laptops indeed have not been the best Linux-runners as far as I know.

Same here, I had no problems until 11.0 Alpha0. During the install, the fan would speed up and not long after, the laptop would power off. I also have the laptop sitting on a cooler running at full speed and separately powered. It was fine from whatever version of SuSE was around in April 2004 right up to openSUSE 10.3. Pop the 10.3 DVD in and it was OK. As a matter of fact, when I changed the hard drive after it failed, I had to install 10.3 instead of 11.0 Alpha, then I upgraded. That's when I noticed the fan sped up with 11.0 Alpha and not with 10.3. It didn't seem to be dependent on the length of time it was powered on. It could be software, none-the-less, but I would advise having a close look at temperature while doing something that stresses the CPU. Another indication that mine is a heat problem, I set "powersave -f" for a few minutes, it was at 76C, now I have it set "powersave -l" and it's come down. I just remembered, if I compiled a kernel with powersave -f, it would power off part way through. These laptops are not easy to get into so I could inspect the heatsink. You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/boycie Boycie:/home/boycie # powersave -l Policy set to powersave Boycie:/home/boycie # sensors k8temp-pci-00c3 Adapter: PCI adapter Core0 Temp: +71.0°C

Building a kernel with "powersave -l" and it seems stable at 63C. Boycie:~ # sensors k8temp-pci-00c3 Adapter: PCI adapter Core0 Temp: +63.0°C
Regards Sid.
Regards Sid. OK, so our problems seem related. My proc doesn't support regulating the cpufreq (see my answers to Holger), so that's no solution for me:
powersave -l liblazy (liblazy_dbus_send_method_call:97): Received error reply: Method "SetCPUFreqGovernor" with signature "s" on interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.CPUFreq" doesn't exist Could not set CPUFreq policy to powersave. I think it's time opening a bug here. But for my part that will have to be later this afternoon or tomorrow.
