Henning,
It sounds like the solution to my problems is to upgrade to 11.1 where the Yast system tray applet is replaced by kupdateapplet.
Thanks,

Hi JC Francois,
Actually I wouldn't be so quick, it's not working in 11.1 yet (for me at least), but that may change when it goes gold. Q
* with patches selected on the patch tab -> I am prompted for root password then nothing happens at all
This is a known bug - the reason seems to be that when there are dependency conflicts with patches, then the zypper command returns a prompt, and the KDE updater tool does not handle that case.
See the bug report
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=399661
(In some cases, YaST is able to resolve the prompts without prompting the user, so you might see the bug even if YaST installs the patches/upgrades with no questions asked).
There is currently no fix for SuSE 11.0 as far as I know (the link given in the bug report is now dead), but there is one in 11.1
* with packages selected on the upgrade tab -> I am prompted for root password then get the following error message"kdesu(9820)/kdesu (kdelibs) KDESu::KDESuClient::command: [ /usr/src/packages/BUILD/kdelibs-4.1.3/kdesu/client.cpp : 196 ] no reply from daemon"
As far as I recall, that was a problem with kdesu and long commands. It's most likely this bug:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=414284
(again, with the same dead link for a patch in SuSE 11.0)
Hope this helps, Henning
