[opensuse-factory] RFC: Green or Gray?
Hi! Factory users of KDE will have noticed: yast is green now. I meant this theming only for installation (it was derived from "Pimp up my installer" mockup) and I still think it's not the best of ideas to have theming everywhere. So I see pros of theming: - people connect yast and installer (when using KDE) - it gives yast an extraordinary look and cons: - it's slightly (on nv driver even dramatically) slower - it does not adapt to the desktop's style and won't ever - it gives yast an extraordinary look Do you see more on either side? Which is neither pro nor con.
- Might add an opt to switch off 'skin'? There is: export Y2STYLE=nada

Hi, My YaST is White/Gray (retro-look) and I'm fine with it :) - Theming is great, we wanted that feature for a long time - Extraordinary ... hmm, depends on the selected theme :) But that's even better. - Not slower anymore: I had this problem with nv driver but it seems to have vanished after compiling core/qt/... - It wouldn't adapt to my WindowMaker style anyway ;) - Ah, Extraordinary again ;) Again, depends on theme I'll all for the current look (but with pink buttons only!!!) ;) Bye Lukas

For those who don't test Factory (shame on you!) here is a screenshot: - http://www.cgoncalves.info/images/trash/opensuse-greenmess2.png Running KDE4 I suppose it looks even worse because Oxygen theme is mostly in grey and black colours. -- Regards, Carlos Gonçalves

I "vote" for it to be green in installation only. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

+2, but maybe the user could choose the new look (which is way too cool, btw) in some sysconfig var, for example. I agree. Grey by default, and, if possible, the option of choosing. Regards, Alberto --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Do you see more on either side? I really like the new yast theme for installation.
Nevertheless I think it is too colorfull for day-to-day-system-administration. It does not look well integrated into the KDE-desktop. It just looks _too_ extraordinary. ;) Therefore I suggest to use the theme just for the installation. But that's just my personal opinion ... if done correctly (e.g. integrates with the opensuse theme (bootsplash, desktop colors, backgrounds), it helps the user to realize that yast is the thing to use if they want to customize their system ("it looks different than a normal application -> it is not a normal application"). -- RPMLINT information under http://en.opensuse.org/Packaging/RpmLint --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

This is exactly the attitude, which seduce every win32 hacker to create his own style. We already have too much style differences from all the toolkits, do we really wish to incite every linux hacker to follow this route? For me YaST is a rather normal application. ;) I'd vote to not theming it after the installation is completed. Andras -- Quanta Plus developer - http://quanta.kdewebdev.org K Desktop Environment - http://www.kde.org

And it is pleasant to the eyes. But when i think about it. has anyone thought about it how it will look for people with red / green colorblindness. It should not get unreadable in that case. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e- mail: opensuse- factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e- mail: opensuse- factory+help@opensuse.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I too agree that the new theme is nice. But, Stefan Kunze makes a good point. With my vision loss, I have a slight colorblindness and it is a little bit hard to read. I haven't played around with the installer in several weeks, so I can't give specifics. But I'll certainly give it a shot this weekend and speak more fully to this topic after I try it out again.
