I just verified on two distinct installations that zypper dup from 11.3 to 11.4 will fail and break the package system by removing liblzma. This is similar to the experience mentioned by Greg KH regarding Tumbleweed "Tumbleweed for 11.3 is now closed" but in answer to that thread I have updated 3 machines from 11.3 to 11.4, x86_64 and i386, by changing the repos on those that are available and disabling those that are not, I actually did it with 11.2 to 11.4 and that is also running. Did you do zypper in zypper before zypper up because I did not. No I intentionally didn't. It's not that I could not make it to upgrade with some fiddling - the point is that for the average guy it won't work out. Another user on that ticket could also reproduce this behaviour. No I intentionally didn't. It's not that I could not make it to upgrade with some fiddling - the point is that for the average guy it won't work out. Another user on that ticket could also reproduce this behaviour.

Maybe the problem is more with the most recent 11.3 updates that with the 11.4 repo.

I checked on all the updated machines and liblzma0 was still on each one so that would seem to be the solution, lucky for me.

After running into this problem I created a softlink liblzma.so.0 to liblzma.so.5.0.0 This resulted in weird rpm failures (sorry I do not recall the error message exactly), with something about read failure cpio. The work around in the bug zypper up rpm eliminates the problem. Funny thing about VirtualBox -- it saved my bacon last night when I came across this same error. I'd done a zypper dup with a pre-download of all the packages, and then it went to install. It borked out after it went to delete liblzma and the resulting rpm installation child processes couldn't find the library. At this point, I didn't know how much of a pickle I was in, so I dared not shut down my system. I *did* have an installation of RC1 sitting around in vbox, so fired it up, downloaded 11.3's liblzma, extracted out the one little library file needed, sftp'd it over, and then POOF! Back in business. The workaround in http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Most_annoying_bugs_11.4 is good. If one does 'zypper up rpm' _before_ zypper dup, then it is OK. That works from 11.3, 11.4 RC1 and 11.4 RC2. To publicize the problem/workaround as much as possible, it was posted in the opensuse.org.help.prerelease-beta forum, reposted in o.o.h.install-boot-login, and added to http://tinyurl.com/64vyovj, the Preinstallation FAQ. How soon can the fix be put into the FTP upgrade sites? Once that is done, the bug will no longer affect the people doing on-line upgrades, which should cover the bulk of users. Then I needed to configure the network manually as yast is not working yet and I had the network setup to be dealt with by NetworkManager. The work around allows me to complete the upgrade, however, it's still not in an appropriate state for the "average joe". BTW, this is the second machine that had the "loosing the X-server" problem. Thus I'd say it is not isolated. I did not try the "just run zypper dup" method. After zypper dup is complete X-server works again as expected. zypper dup no more removes liblzma0. only the "zypper in zypper" complains about conflicts, with option 2 of 5 being the only one not causing a bunch of more questions. And that includes removing PackageKit and kupdateapplet which is not really nice. I will have to add zypper dup tests to openQA automation to counter Murphy's law: everything that can fail, will eventually fail. I had the best success just running 'zypper dup' after changing the repos (this was mentioned earlier in the thread) There were not a lot of conflicts to resolve as in the "zypper in zypper" route. I would say just using "zypper dup" provides the upgrade experience we're looking for. I've had to kill the upgrade twice so far because of hangs. Not sure if the 2nd restart will finish, but it's showing less packages needed each time(of course, the kernel was the first failure, so I dunno what will happen. Oh well, it's not a production machine).

So if that is the official way of doing things, the SDB article should be kept up-to-date. I remember that it was part of the article (or its predecessor) yet since it was removed I thought there was a reason for it. For me a simple zypper dup worked. Without any conflicts and without any zypper in zypper or zypper up zypper. I might just have been lucky though. Just thought I would post on two personal expereinces of upgrading from 11.3 > 11.4. One I did zypper in zypper first, it asked about five quite complex questions, but I am experienced enough to know that mostly what it wants to delete or upgrade or switch vendor is usually ok and it worked. (Done at init 3). In this laptop I did a running upgrade at init 5, whilst continuing to surf the net and chat on irc. The only command used was zypper dup. Everything worked perfectly, I just had to remove a few out of date repos which were not essential. End result is both machines on 11.4 but dup asked far less questions.
