NLD 10 presentation videos
Hi there, osnews.com has a news article on a presentation of the next Novell Linux Desktop with some videos which present the new features of the GNOME desktop used in NLD (http://www.linuxedge.org/?q=node/55). According to the current Novell Linux roadmap, Suse Linux 10.1 will be the basis for NLD 10 so the question is if we will see such features in one of the next Suse Linux versions too? Greetings Jens Siebert

Yes. What you see in 10.1 will be in NLD 10 for instance. Ciao, Marcus

Errr... Yeah... I thought of the opposite direction. E.g. The nice visual effects in this NLD presentation... Will they be in 10.1? Greetings Jens Siebert

The nice visual effects are on Nats Laptop ... The Xgl he demoed will of course be in 10.1, but if you will be able to get the nice visual effects, relies on: - Good 3d hardware - correct setup of all components and integration. This is only done to some degree. Ciao, Marcus

So how do I go about getting my hands on Nats laptop? :)

I suspect my Latitude D600 won't be up to the job, alas. Do you know if the restriction of noty being able to use 3d with dual screen is in Xgl? Cheers Pete

Didn't realize that it is Xgl based.

Not a problem...

I see... So let the tinkering begin ;-) Greetings Jens Siebert

GREAT DEMO: When trying to view video I with GNOME of 10.0 (using the defaulöt application, totem), I get (German L18n) "Totem konnte
file:///tmp/NLD_SL_conf_1.avi<< nicht wiedergeben. There were no decoders found to handle the stream, you might need to install the corresponding plugins."
Great isn't it: For legal reasons, Novell/SuSE doesn't ship an reasonable audio/video decoders, but still publishes videos with proprietary formats like AVI that Novell/SuSE's own distributions are unable to present. I hardly doubt that any Windows user will become very excited on this. Regards, Ulrich

Ulrich, could you please try to avoid spreading bogus stuff -- those videos were in no way "published by Novell". It's pretty obvious that some on in the audience captured that videos. Regards Christoph

OK, but why did you advertise the link here if Novell has nothing to do with it? Regards, Ulrich

I thought that it would be of interest for the openSUSE community to get some visuals of what will be possible with future versions of GNOME/X/Xgl. It wasn't meant to be an advertising of future Novell Linux versions nor am I affiliated with Novell/Suse. If you have problems with playback of proprietary (Windows) video formats you should have a look at http://packman.links2linux.org where you can get everything you need for playback of such files. I just want to point out that theora is a powerfull codec. Yes we ship encoder and decoder and xine/kaffeine does support it. bye adrian -- Adrian Schroeter SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany email: adrian@suse.de
