[opensuse-factory] Call for testing: Alpha7 Live CDs
Hi! With openSUSE 10.3 we want to try something different: have live CDs available already during beta phase, so as a start I created live CDs of the installation set of the i386 GNOME CD and i386 KDE CD (the final version might come with a live installer if it works out). So please give these a try: http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3-Alpha7/iso/cd/openSUSE-10.3-A... http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.3-Alpha7/iso/cd/openSUSE-10.3-A... Report problems in this thread - this is a very first try of 10.3 live CDs, so we better wait for the beta with bugs :) Greetings, Stephan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

So.. downloaded the KDE CD. It booted up nicely... and quite fast (in VirtualBox). Once the desktop got started up, I was presented with a popup saying that it had found a network card and would I like to set it up. I clicked Yes, and got the window for the root password... which I don't know (at least it's not obvious at this point). The NIC works fine... so only a minor issue... but still, this raises the question, what does a user need to do when he or she tries to do something that needs root level access.. for example to reconfigure a NIC. It's 'linux', like the user name, like the user's password... Bye, Steve --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Neither will recognize the graphics card, Radion xpress 200 series, on my wife's x86_64 3800+ hp pavilon 1330n. Text mode works fine. There are possibly some drivers missing. Can you file a bug about it if it's the case? will try with "sax2 -a". Bare "sax2" did not get to a graphics screen after booting "init 3".
Will do. Not much linux experience (me) with wifi. Have WPA2-PSK authorization, could that be a problem? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe it's because it needs the madwifi driver, which is not included in opensuse. Alpha-7 KDE live on AMD XP2400 (32bit) / 512M RAM, nVidia based MoBo Really cool - but one or two things that could make it even cooler: 1. During boot, multiple errors from AppArmor and Fuse scroll by (I see something very similar with the normal Alpha-7 so probably not specific to the live CD). Worrying / confusing for a newbie. 2. Video & sound seemed to set up correctly but hard disc (also nVidia interface, I think) was not visible - even read-only. Should it be (if so I will find out what driver is required)? HD access would be nice... Even better if default to RO but permit RW somehow? 3. Very strange & probably confusing for a newbie to be prompted for network setup (even if they guessed teh password / saw this thread). Is it really neccessary? Can't YaST look for a DHCP server & only start the dialogue if one isn't found? Also might be nice to arrange for the splash screen to advise user of default root pw? 4. It would be invaluable to prompt for proxy config - especially if we're going to have a network setup dialogue anyway. 5. On exit, CD eject would be handy - it's locked until moments before power-down. More machines to test on tomorrow... Hope this helps. I repeat - it looks really great! -- Regards, Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

1) QEMU without acceleration is still usable (about 300 MHz CPU) 2) QEMU with acceleration is fine except one has to configure default gateway. 3) eMachines 6528 (64 bit, AMD 3500, with 1 GB MB RAM, IDE hard disk) Dual screen has the same problem as in regular 10.3 a7, but end result is one good screen. 4) MSI motherboard, Athlon 2000+, IDE hard disks, nVidia MX 4000 AGP Boots with errors mentioned in other posts. Has icon on a desktop that gives back greeter. Nice. Openoffice has somewhat dark splash ;-) -- Regards, Rajko. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

10.3-Alpha-7-KDE-Live freezes during install on two different K6-2/500 machines (VIA chipsets I think, one I know has a Gigabyte GA-5AX mobo) - at the point where the log says "freeing kernel memory... xxx freed" Not sure what more info might be useful? Look serious though especially as this is just the sort of hardware some people will want to experiment on. BTW - what is recommended / minimum spec for RAM / CPU? It would be sensible to put this on the select screen at CD boot, ideally with a check to see what seems to be there (but I don't know how easy that is)? Downloading the Beta-1 version now, will try over the weekend. I assume you'd prefer reports against the newest version? -- Regards, Richard (MQ) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I gave the (kde) CD a spin in a HP Compaq dc7700 pc. That gave me this output after loading the kernel: Loading KIWI CD Boot-system... -----> Including required kernel modules... -----> Probing module: e1000 -----> Probing module: ehci-hcd -----> Probing module: generic -----> Failed to detect CD drive! -----> rebootExcepion: reboot in 60 sec... and it did reboot afterwards. I do recall not being able to start (DVD) install of openSUSE 10.2 on it as it said it did not find installation media. Rescue mode worked IIRC. If it would be useful I could try to boot it in recue mode with a beta1 installation CD and post some "dmesg" "lspci" outputs. What more would be useful information? regards j -- Jonas Helgi Palsson "Microsoft is not the answer. Microsoft is the question.
