[opensuse-factory] Should touchpad padding be disabled by default?

Hi, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=554884 _My_ solution for kde4: ~/.kde4/Autostart/touchpad.sh: synclient TapButton1=1
I'm a little puzzled here... the bug says that touchpad tap is _disabled_ by default in KDE4... it certainly is not disabled in my KDE4 installs? In my KDE4.3.1 install (since upgraded to 4.3.4) touchpad tap is enabled right from the install, and I didn't do anything to enable it. Now that it's disabled in KDE4, is there an easy way (ie using the GUI and Configure Desktop) to re-enable it for those that like to have touchpad tap enabled? I see and option for it in Gnome under Control Center > Mouse > Touchpad > Enable mouse clicks with touchpad. I see nothing for the same toggle in KDE4 in the Configure Desktop menus - unless I've missed something. Changing this to the opposite of what users are used to and expect coming from other OSes seems quite short sighted to me. OSX uses touchpad tap.. as does Windows - at least on the laptops that I've used they did. You can use Synaptiks or kcm_touchpad (I had the best luck with the former) from kde4:community repository - or Touchfreeze from Packman repository. I guess there's a pretty good chance that 11.3 KDE will have one of the KDE tools included in the main distro, which should help/remove the need for changing the defaults. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

So.... to accommodate the Gnome standard the KDE users have to install a community package from a community repo? That seems like a poor decision.

That shouldn't be a "pretty good chance"... that should be an absolute must! As Stefan said, no matter what is done, it'll be wrong to half the people. If KDE has a Configure Desktop option for this, at least those who want it can toggle it back on. In the bug, Stefan said touchpad tap is disabled in KDE... was this actually checked? I've looked at two more laptops running KDE4 default installs... and all have touchpad tap *enabled*. I've opened a bug on this against KDE... see: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=561274 It appears that KDE uses whatever X uses.. which means touchpad tap is off, and KDE provides no way to turn this back on. Gnome has an option setting for this functionality.. so where it's easy for Gnome users to turn this feature back on to make their touchpad behave as it does in other OSes (eg Windows, OSX), KDE appears to be missing this option. No. In 11.2 KDE doesn't do anything, because nobody told us that X itself (i.e. + SaX) won't handle its own setup anymore. But as this is only for 11.3 and we've been told this time, we will most probably include one of the KDE tools officially.

As I said, KDE doesn't do anything with it, it's the X default in 11.2. If you don't like the default in to-be-11.3, take it back to the original bugreport that caused the change of it in X. -- Lubos Lunak KDE developer -------------------------------------------------------------- SUSE LINUX, s.r.o. e-mail: l.lunak@suse.cz , l.lunak@kde.org Lihovarska 1060/12 tel: +420 284 084 672 190 00 Prague 9 fax: +420 284 028 951 Czech Republic http://www.suse.cz -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The original bug report was opened because a Gnome user noticed that X (and this the openSUSE installer) does not follow the Gnome settings where touchpad tap is off. He felt that this was confusing to Gnome users who expect touchpad tap to be off. Re-opening that bug report, or opening a new one doesn't solve the issue. It would probably just annoy the Gnome users who think this option should be off everywhere. I don't care one way or another what the default is, as long as there is an option to toggle it for users who prefer it one way or another. Gnome has this in it's config settings... KDE does not (not yet that I can see). If a toggle option is available for KDE4 in 11.3, then that's great. Hi, I think that your solution is not much good, as it disable it always. I suggest siabling it only when you type: syndaemon -i 1 -d -t -K it disable taping if you type any key (not ctrl or shift etc.) for one second. So if you writing, touchpad is disabled and when you moving mouse you can use it.
