[opensuse-factory] Why does ksnapshot insist on saving a .jpeg and not .jpg anymore?
Guys, I am just curious why I can't save images in KDE4's version of ksnapshot as .jpg anymore. For some reason, every time I try to save a file in ksnapshot as a .jpg, I type "." "j" "p" and as soon as I type "g" the dialog sticks an "e" in there between the "p" and the "g" -- quite annoying really. Is there anyway to change this? Or is this like the konqueror icon text field width issue where I can't set my text width to 525 px. anymore -- my choices are now (small medium or large)? You don't need to type in the extension, you know- all you need is to select the the file type in the Save As menu. However, the extension will still end up as jpeg because, as I understand it, this is the new extension name for this (lossy) format. If you have a TV card and use either xine or kaffeine to view TV and use their Capture facility, you will find that both save snapshots at png files. I agree whole-heartedly and understand png's superior qualities, but for work like the directory full of screenshots I took during the Beta 5 review, those needed to be jpeg. Nobody likes a 600k screenshot ;-) But, what I want to understand is why the change now. jpg and jpeg have coexisted since the format was introduced to support that crippled 8.3 file format for at least the past 20 years and openSuSE has always accommodated the .jpg designation. What standard or guideline changed and what group within novell is handling it? I'd just like to read up on why. It's kind of like not knowing why we switched from ethel to unleaded.... -- David C. When is the last time you tried and got .jpg? KDE3? ksnapshot has not even a default image type defined if you go save as - and the file dialog will use what's configured for the mimetype. And KDE3 had it's own definitions while KDE4 uses freedesktop.org standard.
