As you say, TW is a rolling version and the repos will have only the modules for the current kernel. Do you have the old kernel still in your GRUB menu? If so, the modules for all the old kernels should still be available. Updating the rest of VB should not affect those modules. If the modules are not available, then you will need to build your own.
