I have discovered that I don't have the rootfs in /etc/fstab. It probably gets mounted by some obscure magic. Actually I have a suspicion that the new automatic configuration or second stage configuration, whatever it's called, didn't run at all after installation. I also have this problem with the reiserfs root partition not being unmounted correctly on shutdown.
