[opensuse-factory] DVD iso?
Searching for the Alpa5 I thought: Is it be much extra effort to make available (and also get tested!) the DVD iso at the same time as the CD isos? DVDRW burners have been usual several years and simplify the inflation of amounts of disks and the installation work itself. Just my suggestion. Rgds, Terje J. A proud decision, if you are aware that not even the apache from SUSE-10.0 is able to deliver files > 2 GB. And the 10.0 firefox is unable too. ftp.gwdg.de will only be able to deliver this via rsync. But anyways, the mirrors will be glad not to have to serve both. ftp.gwdg.de will only be able to deliver this via rsync.
ftp-1.gwdg.de should be able to deal with it!
But anyways, the mirrors will be glad not to have to serve both.
This is just done by way of an exception, because the media (cd) change handling is currently broken and installing from CDs thereby impossible. With the upcoming Beta1 we will try to only release CD ISOs again. Yes. ftp-1 is running SLES9 - ftp, http, rsync are working fine with files

It's almost at Alpha5 stage -- the next sync should bring them up to par. We will disable Factory-syncing for a couple of days, as soon as it's up-to-date. We screwed up with factory. It contains 99 % of the packages from Alpha5 but the installation image (which you need to install via a boot iso, is too old: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 86638592 2006-10-04 10:20 FACTORY/inst-source/boot/i386/root We have just checked in new packages (and then noticed that the last update run missed this) so that the next major sync to FACTORY will not only contain an updated installation image but also packages after Alpha5 :-(. There's no easy way for us to fix this now - and therefore I will not stop the syncing of factory, Sorry, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj/ SUSE Linux Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

Terje, as Eberhard said: Our mirrors cannot server both. It's also double the bandwith to sync out from us to them in a short time. Therefore we only make one set available - and CDs are easier to sync since DVDs are larger than 2 GB which will cause problems for some mirrors. The problem is that BitTorrent as P2P is not everywhere allowed. There are large companies and universities who do block all P2P traffic. Even some providers do so. A big problem for those of us non degroupé on Free in France, VMware virtual images are often only on bit torrent even though they are often very small, it's a real PITA that the film/music bunch have killed it for everyone else. -- Dave Cotton <dcotton@linuxautrement.com> --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The question was to make images available on bittorrent as well, not exclusively. Some providers/organisations blocking it shouldn't be a good enough reason to withdraw it from everyone else as well. No no, I did not mean to remove the classic images, just offer the DVDs in addition, but only as torrents, since the mirrors cant handle the load of it all. Has support for jigdo already been discussed? That way users could easily build their own DVD isos, without us having to worry about serving big files. This is a real shame. I'm getting quite fed up with this CD flipping, and putting DVD ISOs as well as CD ISOs (and all the files by themselves too) on mirrors is clearly not very smart use of resources. Are you sure the lack of jigdo use for 10.1 didn't have more to do with lack of mentioning this prominently, and making the jigdo files available in the first place? I remember having to beg for them several times before they turned up on somewhere. I think it would also be a good idea to drop CD ISOs from the mirrors (or perhaps all but the first), and make a multi-distro jigdo package available instead. Sorry, but this is crap: You always neglected alternative download solutions like Bittorrent or Jigdo by providing that stuff that late that most people have already started to fetch the files from the first mirror they appeared on and thus killing this one almost completely. I suggested multiple times to open Bittorrent already when the mirror servers are preloaded to have a strong set of seeders availlable when the announcement was done. When I did so I was always told that this is possible in principle but it just never happened. The problem with Jigdo was and is that you are shipping multiple versions of the noarch and src packages. I suggested to use all those packages from one architecture for all of them. I was told that this could be changed that way in principle but it never happened. So in my opinion the fact that nobody is using this is a result of how they are offered and all of this stuff seems to be something like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The main problem with jigdo files for Alphas is the fact that we would either need to branch ftp trees for that or use the CD images as foundation for jigdo. IMO both doesn't really make sense. Publishing jigdo templates for the final release should be easy. Wonder if it is possible to burn the DVD from the downloaded CD isos directly, without the need to temporary have dual diskspace available for keeping both the CD isos and DVD iso images? To mentione, Uninett.no has several Linux distros and all of the openSUSE isos available.
