[opensuse-factory] more probs booting 12.3 m1
I have been running/updating 12.3/m0/m1 in a VBox for some time and recently experienced a problem booting the vm which was solved by chrooting in a reissuing grub2-install after updating the installed system. I am again unable to boot the vm which provides the following error msg: 3 logical volume(s) in the volume group "system" now active an no further action. I chrooted into and updated the system, zypper dup, and issued: /usr/sbin/grub2-install /dev/sda which completed successfully. But I am still unable to boot? what to do? tks, -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

ps: Using the present (174) live iso will no chroot into vm complaining about missing udev. And 146 requires issuing "vgscan --mknodes", and is necessary to issue "vgchange -ay <name> &" as it will not return to prompt. more information available upon request. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

ps2: just guessing but might this be related to moving udev to systemd as it appears the lvm drives are not being mounted/accessable during boot? Is there a way to test ?? [1] http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2012-11/msg00010.html
temp workaround: edit /sbin/mkinitrd, change /sbin/get_kernel_version to /usr/bin/get_kernel_version
Unfortunately, /sbin/mkinitrd already has /usr/bin/get_kernel_version. I surprised that no-one else has a problem. Recent live/net iso's fail to install in lvm (haven't tried non-lvm). I cannot even chroot into existing m1 system with iso's later than ~146. KDE-Live 182 will not even boot: Starting D-Bus System Message Bus... [FAILED] Failed to start D-Bus System Message Bus. See 'systemctl status dbus.service' for details. Starting Avahi nDNS/DNS-SD Stack... [FAILED] Failed to start Avahi nDNS/DNS-SD Stack. see 'systemctl status avahi-daemon.service' for details. repeating ad-inifitum ... an excellent err msg as one has no control at this point. NET 182 will not install hanging at 3% .... see two newer iso's, #189. Downloading for trial...... -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

NET was 189, KDE is 187 but makes no difference. Neither is functional :^(. How is *anyone* testing 12.3, m0/m1/?? To achieve a workable system, dl an old NET iso, I used openSUSE-NET-x86_64-Build0147-Media.iso I have a successful install, running, which I immediately updated and rebooted, again successfully. I did not use lvm but will do another install and try with it. My last several attempts with btrfs all failed. Until I see someone using it successfully on factory, I will not try it again. There really is tooooo much wrong with the factory iso's at this stage. It is impossible to test something which will not boot. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

lvm is *not* usable. pvcreate fails. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have a booting 64 bit Intel/Intel gfx created as a zypper dup from 12.2. I have booted now a 32 bit Intel/NVidia gfx installed from factory-snapshot via HTTP after above query. YaST firstboot failed to run, but I have a successful root login with only error messages from bash complaining trying to do setlocale. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
