[opensuse-factory] Fwd: [opensuse-project] Packaging Kolab.org Groupware
Not everybody is on -project, so I thought it's worth to share this here. As Georg Greve said in his talk at the last openSUSE Conference: Groupware is the last of the three pillars of modern IT which Free Software isn't covering very well (we've got Browsers and Office nailed). Kolab is the only real free and open solution out there, and it's an incredibly good one. But the downside is that it is big and not easy to deploy - that's where good, quality packages matter. So, if you care about groupware & server things and want to do a service to Software Freedom, chipping in here would really make a difference! And if you're looking for a Groupware solution at your job or for a client - consider Kolab over the less-open (or closed) stuff, it's good AND a proper Free Software project. ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Subject: [opensuse-project] Packaging Kolab.org Groupware Date: Wednesday 20 March 2013, 17:49:44 From: Torsten Grote <grote@kolabsys.com> To: opensuse-project@opensuse.org Dear all, you might have heard that the truly Free Software Groupware Kolab has been released recently in version 3 and has undergone a major rewrite. It supports several native clients and now also mobile phones with ActiveSync. Soon there will also be CalDAV and CardDAV support. So you'll have all freedom to synchronize your personal data across all your devices without relying on big 'cloud' providers. The old Kolab 2 had been packaged for OpenSUSE, but is totally outdated now. Aeneas Jaißle restarted the packaging efforts for Kolab 3 and has made amazing progress. Everything is packaged and can be installed right away. Thanks Aeneas! You can read more about the progress and the current state of the packages in Aeneas' blog [1]. We are still looking for more people who could test the packages and provide feedback. If somebody wants to help with packaging that would even be more awesome. Some little help can already have a big impact and take some weight off of Aeneas' shoulders. You'll find the packages at the OpenSUSE Build Service [2] [3]. Some more outdated information is in the OpenSUSE wiki [4]. If somebody could help bring this up to date, this would be very much appreciated. If you like to get in touch with Aeneas, you'll find him at OBS [5]. And if you haven't tried out Kolab yet, you probably should. There is a public demo [6] if you just want to take a quick look. With this short sentence, you are alienating everyone working on the already packaged for openSUSE solutions which are readily available and shipped with 12.3. Good job :-) You are probably lucky that not everybody is on -project. -- Stefan Seyfried "If your lighter runs out of fluid or flint and stops making fire, and you can't be bothered to figure out about lighter fluid or flint, that is not Zippo's fault." -- bkw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Like what, are there other groupware solutions for linux which are real free software projects? Like, developed in the open, under a free license and all that? (I know there are some 'open core' or simply closed groupware solutions that happen to have 'open' in their name out there but I'm not even sure if we ship them...)
Good job :-)

Yes. Horde, for example. susi:~ # zypper se horde|wc 110 987 13754 susi:~ # zypper se horde|head -10 Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... S | Name | Summary | Type --+-------------------+---------------------------------------+-------- | horde5 | Horde Base Application | package | horde5-content | Horde Tagging support | package | horde5-gollem | Horde Gollem File Manager | package | horde5-imp | IMP - A web based webmailer | package | horde5-ingo | Ingo email filter rules manager | package

Horde is GPLv2 IIRC, which should qualify as free license even for Georg Greve...

Sorry, I'm quite happy we ship other things and I shouldn't have said it that strongly. I shouldn't have missed Horde as I wrote about what we ship there for 11.4 if I recall. I wasn't aware it was a full groupware suite, thought it was mostly a web based mail frontend. I recall it was shipped as part of Kolab 2.x. As far as Zimbra and Tine are concerned - I was hinting at a preference we seem to have for more openly developed projects (eg MySQL vs MariaDB, LibreOffice vs OpenOffice.org). Kolab doesn't require a CLA and doesn't do code dumps, which is nice. No reason not to ship the other stuff or to deride the efforts there, sorry for the insensitivity. And I'd love to see not only Kolab but also Tine and Zimbra as part of the next openSUSE release. Would be nice to have groupware server stuff to talk about as a major feature ;-) /Jos -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
