[opensuse-factory] NetworkManager
Hello, since beta3, I have trouble to use wireless networks with NetworkManager. Trying to configure via Yast Network Settings, there is a Warning: This configuration is not compatible with NetworkManager. Use nm-settings applet or switch to Traditional Method with ifup. I can configure wireless with ifup, and use kinternet, but would prefer to use NetworkManager. NetworkManager can make a cable connection with DHCP, but not via wlan. Can anyone give me a hint, what might be wrong ? Thanks, Markus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yast networkmodule broke, so the configuration does not get saved, that is why ifup doesn't work, and NM doesn't find a wave. I have it since last week on 32 bit, and since this mornings update now i notice, i just booted up, also on 64 bit... I filed a bug for it: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=440928 -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...) the strange thing is, that in my case wireless works with ifup/kinternet, and not with Networkmanager. I am on x86_64, in case that matters. Can provide more info, if necessary. Thanks, Markus

I did not try kinternet... My wireless doesn't work with ifup on my 32bits, and not with NM. My wired doesn't work with ifup on my 64bits but ok with NM. If you don't mind please add your experiences about this issue to the bug? thnx. -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.) (Now or never...) Just for explanation - NM and ifup now use a completely separated configuration and YaST is able to handle only the ifup one. So, if you decide to use NM, YaST network settings cannot be used at all. Oddball and I we had an thread where I described, that ifup doesn't works for me and yast said to use nm-applet from gnome. Different user, different problem? I think the yast network settings are full broken. I think my wireless woks because of the Livecd I used?

OK, thanks for clearing this up. Is NM still the recommended way of configuring a wireless network ? Because I have no way of making a wireless connection under KDE at the moment (the network applet under KDE4 doesn't work for me). It depends on your use case. I assume you use laptop, where NM is the recommended way.
Because I have no way of making a wireless connection under KDE at the moment (the network applet under KDE4 doesn't work for me).
I suggest to use knetworkmanager (KDE3 version) for now, work on KDE4 applet is still under heavy bug fixing AFAIK. Stano -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

until there is a kde4 version, can't the gnome nm-applet be used? I use 3G cards and NM is superior in this.. Tambet said not to run nm-applet directly and some policy or something is preventing me from doing this.

That's really out of contexr here. I meant "don't run nm-applet from the terminal when you want to configure the networking", not "don't ever use nm-applet". There can be exactly one NetworkManager frontend at any time running, so if you're already running knm, nm-applet won't work. Whichever frontend you prefer should get started from the session. Tambet

What bothers me is this: Driver Info #0: Driver Status: ath5k is active Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe ath5k" Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown config=no? available=yes? need=no? active=unknown? this is complete nonsens! it has to be configuered if it is available, because it is needed to work, if it is not working it is not active, why is that unknown? -- Enjoy your time around, Oddball (M9.)
