thanks. i've just installed Plasma 5.3 and it has gone away. I wasn't using plasma before. it got into a mess when the software updater tried to install the snapshot but failed because of a missing dependency, so i use Yast and installed that way. Thats when i got the problem. I then noticed a posting that Plasma 5.3 was becoming the Tumbleweed default so i "zypper dup". Now just have to find away to get icons on the panel and desktop that are not widgets

Two ways to accomplish this: 1. Add a "Folder" applet 2. Right click on the Desktop, "Desktop settings", Switch "Layout" to "Folder" Actually, the second is a "maximised" version of the first. It shows everything in the $HOME/Desktop folder by default, but you can adjust that. Thanks. On KDE4 you could right click the app in the menu and it would have 2 options "Add to Desktop" and "Add to Panel" - do you know if that is going to be coming to Plasma?

Yes, and that's actually no different than in KDE4... ;)
Well, openSUSE uses "Kicker" as default application launcher, which does have those context menu entries here. But they seem to be missing from Kickoff (KDE4's default) at the moment, right-clicking would only show which documents you ever opened with that application I think. No idea whether this has been removed on purpose, or that's a bug. But you could switch back to Kicker by right-clicking on the icon and selecting "Alternatives", then those options should be there. Or just drag'n'drop an entry from the menu to the panel/desktop, like it also was possible in KDE4 already.
