[opensuse-factory] Initial Grub Video Mode
Hi, Recently I was installing openSUSE on my mums computer (ok, it was 10.3, but nevertheless I think my post belongs to this list, as I know nothing like this will be changed for a released version but it might happen for a future version). So the situation: Her computer is connected via VGA to a TV (yes, not computer screen). The TV supports a resolution of 640x480@60Hz (it's ugly for all of us.. but she just does not want to find a place for another ugly screen). with this screen, the Grub Boot Menu is not showed but there is only flickering on the screen. By knowing what keypresses are needed, I selected Resolution 640x480 for the installation and the rest went smoothly after. Of course for after the installation I had to give her a textmode grub (timing out in 2 seconds, as she'll never ever use another entry.. they are for me ;) ) At what mode does the GRUB menu actually operate? Is this mode mandatory for some reasons or could we reduce it? The main approach should be to go as low as possible at the beginning and increase with sanity as much as possible later... but not being able to see the first screen to select resolutions or start the installation can be quiet an issue (of course first question was: but windows worked on this computer, why is this happening). Nevertheless: she's a happily converted user... all she ever does is starting firefox, play some nifty flash games and use Thunderbird for mailing and pidgin for IM... so she's perfectly happy (after the installation once passwd). GRUB initially enters 800x600x16-bit VESA mode. I need GRUB to work differently. I use KVM (kernel-based Virtual Machine) which doesn't support big real mode GFX GRUB extension, so I would like to see GRUB starting with text-mode, and only after few seconds switch to GUI mode. Additionally, this will allow installing openSUSE via Serial COM port in the future. I have an opened bug (feature-request) in openSUSE bugzilla, that asks to introduce delays into standard GRUB, so it will enter text mode, and after few second will re-enter GFX mode. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yeah right, make boot slower even. Alexey commemorate moment for everyone. Is this April 1st? I hope this is not even _considered_ as for it to be of any use to you it would have to be default behaviour which is so nuts I lack words. Why not try and fix kvm interaction? Because it is not just about KVM, but about several issues with graphical GRUB, that do not work in some cases. By _not work_ I mean, that it completely disallows _some_ users to even install openSUSE 10.3 on some systems. I think, that we can go the average way, and introduce the delays only to the install DVD, not to the final installed image on your Hard Disk. This way, I hope it won't hurt you much. Please understand - that I cannot even start the installation process on some systems. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
Hi Wolfgang Woehl ! Perhaps you're right, and I have updated this bug/feature-request. Is it better now? -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
