Re: [opensuse-factory] HPLIP version

I appreciate any help regarding HPLIP very much!
And I like to help wherever I can :-)
As far as I know up to now, submitreq does basically nothing more than telling me that someone likes to get changes committed
I was not aware of this. What I normally do is to create a branch of the original project, make the necessary changes until it builds and then place a submitreq to have my changes incorporated.
Therefore I would like to suggest that you build the newest HPLIP for openSUSE 11.0, 11.1, and factory simply in your home project.
Already done :-) As described above, this is the standard way how I make the updates.
I would very much appreciate it when you make your HPLIP based upon our official source RPM.
As indicated I created a link to the hplip package in Factory and started from there. This way I can test which patches should still remain, which needs adjustments and which can be removed.
Additionally - as mentioned above - I think that this way we get the newest HPLIP very much more tested when it can be used by our normal users in openSUSE 11.0 and 11.1 so that it helps both our normal users and us.
The question only is where to announce that there is a newer build for hplip ? I will definitely place a message on the factory mailing list, but I assume that users of the previous openSUSE versions will not read this mailing list Regards Raymond -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

People can still find it with http://software.opensuse.org/search. But for some people a home project is a bit too much "risk" to install software from. Once someone (preferably Johannes) has reviewed your package I would propose to add hplip to the "Printing" top-level project in the buildservice probably. I have to say that I don't know the real status of this project as cups-drivers for example is not building for 11.1 there :-( Given that this is a top level project it should be "basically" supported and if it's not it should go away or move to some non-prominent place. But that's just a sidenote. Probably there is another non-home project where hplip would fit? Absolutely! I don't install anything from a home unless told by the owner to do so. It is impossible to know, by looking at the name of the project, what it is for. Maybe he use it to test things, maybe it is broken, maybe it is for some special needs... it is largely undocumented, unknown, and there is no standard way to learn or even ask. Repositories (and homes) need a standard documentation interface. And that documentation be filled, of course. Even if it is a "go away" notice. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. No, we don't ;-) But we use software search, and if we add your repo, YaST tell us. But this brings another question: how can a user knows if a home repo is intended for use, and what use? Any /standard/ place where each and every repository is documented? Even a README file in the repo itself? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Great! Many Thanks!

Your packages are the second ones in the list when searching for "hplip" on http://software.opensuse.org/search I guess our users will find them ;-)

If you like post a message on the general opensuse@opensuse.org list. But I would like to recommend to be careful with the text in such an announcement regarding support, maintenance, warranty, and liability compare http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-09/msg00638.html For background information you may have a look at https://lists.linux-foundation.org/pipermail/lf_driver_backport/2008-Februar... For the current newest HPLIP I think there might be in particular problems with Qt4 (via python-qt4) when it runs in openSUSE 11.0 (and perhaps also in 11.1) because Qt4 is now the default (before it was Qt3 via python-qt). But one can force that it is built with Qt3 via a configure option setting.
