[opensuse-factory] xf86-input-synaptics still required in Tumbleweed?
Hi all, in the release notes of Leap 42.2 there has been this note: --- In Leap 42.1, the Synaptics X driver (package xf86-input-synaptics) was installed by default but had a lower priority than the libinput driver (xf86-input-libinput). Starting with Leap 42.2: - The Synaptics X driver is no longer installed by default. - If the Synaptics X driver is installed, it will take precedence for any touchpad devices. - The Synaptics X driver is no longer supported by GNOME. This means when the driver is installed, Synaptics touchpads can only be configured to the extent that a basic mouse can. --- Triggered by this comment I removed xf86-input-synaptics and gsynaptics from my Tumbleweed system and left just xf86-input-libinput. But 'zypper dup' tries to reinstall the synaptics xorg driver: --- The following 3 NEW packages are going to be installed: gsynaptics 0.9.16-27.3 gsynaptics-lang 0.9.16-27.3 xf86-input-synaptics 1.8.3-3.4 --- I it correct for TW? To actually uninstall almost anything you have to taboo it. An installed pattern may bring it back. YaST does no longer remember that you manually uninstalled something.
I it correct for TW?
That is a different issue (whether you should use one or the other driver). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

I think the issue is whether Synaptics is supported at all through the installation options, which can be combined. If it isn't supported neither by Gnome nor Wayland, and xf86-input-libinput works fine also on laptops for them, it should be probably banned from any installation default. Lets look forward how the decision will be in https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1010202. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Do you have either the XFCE or LXDE pattern installed? (check with zypper se -i patterns) those two patterns still seem to recommend gsynaptics - which in turn requires x11-input-synaptics (that makes sense) If you have any of those patterns installed, then the main question should really be (as you basically asked) if this is still up to the current time (in most cases the synaptics driver causes more trouble than success - some special hardware excluded, but that is getting less and less) If you have lxde and/or xfce installed, I'd consider filing a bug against those patterns to drop gsynaptics. If you do NOT have those patterns, I'll have to dig up more to find out why your machine pulls this driver in. Cheers, Dominique

Yes, that's it, I have XFCE installed. In particular, the patterns-openSUSE-xfce_laptop recommends gsynaptics. So, this dependency is brought in by gsynaptics. I've raised an issue (https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1010202) but maybe there is a good reason for leaving this recommendation for XFCE.
