[opensuse-factory] Are we planning to add VLC to openSUSE 11.4
Dear Listmates, Are we planning to add VLC to openSUSE 11.4. That is will it be included on the Live CD and then the DVD? Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

An usable version of VLC cannot be added due to legal reasons. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi Christian, Maybe I read this on openFate and/or the forums about adding this in a future release. This couldn’t be any different than Libre Office could it? -- Cheers! It is very different, Multimedia codecs, are unfortunately widely patented :| -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

So why can't VLC be added in crippled form like amaroK and then users have to replace it with Packman version, etc? -- Med Vennlig Hilsen, A. Helge Joakimsen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

A crippled version of vlc and the vlc phonon backend already exist in the KDE:Unstable:Playground repo. An additional benefit of including vlc is that it would also make it possible to ship the webcam application kamoso. I have already added these ideas to the 11.4 KDE idea page: en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:KDE_ideas So now we just need someone to submit them to factory and maintain them there. But in order to really make sense, I guess the cribbled vlc should be fully and easily replacable with the packman version - also when newer vlc releases arrive at packman. I'm not sure about what the levels of API and ABI changes are for vlc. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Or other option, Have the package complete, but without the patented codecs. Those have to be downloaded by the user, at the moment he is installing the lot. Something like the ms-fonts... How would it be if YaST could allow the users to enable some repositories during installation process? That could probably be a cool feature even to use with OBS repositories. In other words, could we offer during install that the users could enable official VLC depot or packman depot ? Would we still be under the patents hammer (imagining we're placing a disclaimer?)? nelson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

FWIW, what we want to do in GNOME is to configure the needed repositories (for codecs, eg) when they are needed. That is, when you need a codec but don't have it. It feels better from a UI point of view, imho, but the legal team is reviewing if that makes sense. Please check Factory (KDE SC 4.5) I found smplayer in Extra: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_Factory/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VLC is included in Unstable:Playground: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Unstable:/Playground/openSUSE... I imagine it will eventually be added to Extra in the future. Yes? This is what we're almost doing in KDE in 11.3 with ksuseinstall - provide a way to look for needed codecs or allow the user to add needed repositories when an app needs them, not at install time. The missing part is not directly registering any particular repo. Are you looking at doing that? We're first waiting on feedback from legal to see what can be done :-) Vincent -- Les gens heureux ne sont pas pressés. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It's already present in installed system: yast2 > software > software repositories
