revisiting the welcome app during hackweek

Hi everyone, As some of you may have noticed, the openSUSE Marketing team has been working on a refreshed look for both Tumbleweed and Leap 16.0. In that spirit, I'd like to take some time during this fall's Hackweek to revisit our welcome app. https://hackweek.opensuse.org/24/projects/opensuse-welcome The current welcome app needs a rewrite anyway, so this seems like a good chance to decide if we want to keep improving it: https://github.com/openSUSE/openSUSE-welcome/pull/36 I’ve already asked on Reddit about the most popular Linux welcome app, and got some mixed feedback from a few individuals. Based on that, I experimented with the Linux Mint welcome app, which was mentioned by a few users. I also worked on a new version using Adwaita and a carousel, matching the new distribution brand colors (cyan for Tumbleweed, yellow for Leap). But I soon realized I was essentially re-creating the gnome-tour app. https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/3d28f7ee08f0 I even spent some time looking at the Tuxedo Control Center, which is probably the most feature-rich welcome app out there, but its complexity and broken dependencies in master branch were a quick turnoff. After discussing this with Jay, who’s put a lot of time into the current welcome app, we think customizing plasma-welcome and gnome-tour with our own artwork and data might be the best option. These apps are designed to be customized and could work well for us. Plus, GNOME Tour comes with a Flatpak option, which could be useful for our immutable distros. I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether this direction makes sense, especially if you’re interested in helping out. Feedback from those interested in contributing is particularly appreciated!
