[opensuse-factory] Latest Update on factory tree and 10.2 Alpha 3 experience

Hello list, I am closely following the factory tree with my installation (Dell Latitude C640). With the latest update from Aug 26th I hoped, some of the issues I had are solved and finally I can use firefox again which was one of the main issues. But a few other things I am struggling with: a) With rug I get dependendy problems updating cpp41, gcc41, gcc41-c++, gcc41-fortran, gcc41-info,gcc41-objc,libstdc++-41-devel The following things I see since updating to 10.2 alpha versions: b) metacity is not usable as window manager for gnome (I currently switched to icewm), starting it at the command line I get the following: sandmann:/ # metacity --replace Window manager warning: Bad key or directory name: "ENABLE_WINDOWS_KEYS": Must begin with a slash (/) Segmentation fault I was not able to find anything about the mentioned key/directory name and also google wasn't helping. Where can I start looking c) At startup I get a message "Gnome Settings Deamon" couldn't be started. After trying all solutions which I found, I completely reinstalled openSUSE (from the factory tree again), created a new user, but unfortunately the problem remained. A process is running: sandmann:/ # ps -ef | grep gnome-settings-daemon mbrasse 4322 1 0 11:54 ? 00:00:02 /opt/gnome/lib/control- center-2.0/gnome-settings-daemon --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --oaf-ior-fd=29 When I kill that process and restart the same command from the console I get: mbrasse@sandmann:/> /opt/gnome/lib/control-center-2.0/gnome-settings-daemon --oaf-activate-iid=OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon --oaf-ior-fd=29 [1156675807,000,xklavier.c:XklStartListen/] The backend does not require manual layout management - but it is provided by the applicationIOR: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 (gnome-screensaver:5155): gnome-screensaver-WARNING **: screensaver already running in this session d) All yast menu entries (gnome main menu and also in the control center) don't force to run yast2 as root. The only way to use yast fully is from the command prompt. e) The gnome keyboard properties applet crashing when I try to start it. I still need to install bug-buddy before I can give more hints. If I start it from the console it hints again, that the gnome-settings-daemon is not running before crashing. f) NetworkManager doesn't recognize my network devices any more and says "no network devices found" so I had to change to the "traditional method using ifup" which works fine. I have a Dell True Mobile WLAN and a integrated fast Ethernet controller in my laptop. ___ Are any of these points visible for other people as well? Are any workarounds or solutions known? Shall I report the things as bugs? And beside from that I am struggling with videos (gstreamer doesn't want to play .wmv movies even after I played around a lot), opensync and evolution, ... This is a normal Factory inconsistency which will probably disappear with the next sync, but others will follow. ;-)
Known: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=201997
Same here. I didn't report it because it is too obvious. It's probably caused by GNOME being a mix of three versions: 2.12, 2.14, 2.16.

You can report that, but since it's the consequence of the obvious c), it's probably not necessary.
That was the same here (ipw2200), but it suddenly disappeared. Try to update as many packages as possible.

Those which are not already reported, yes.
Not being able to play WMV is not a bug; the gstreamer packages in Factory don't contain the ffmpeg plugin for legal reasons, which would be needed to play WMV. The GNOME problems will probably disappear anyway when GNOME is fully updated to version 2.16. Hello, Sorry if this is not the appropiate list to discuss this issue. Santa Barbara SBIG CCD camera is one of the most popular cameras used in astronomy. In order to operate, the CCD requires a firmware to be uploaded upon detection on the USB port. Otherwise, you can't establish any further communications at all. So we have a few hex files needed for firmware uploaded to be placed under /lib/firmware and we have have a rule file to be placed under /etc/udev/rules.d/ that uses fxload to upload the appropiate firmware. We feel it's absolutely neccessary to have this CCD supported. There are more technical details, but I'm not sure whom to address when it comes to this task. Hello, I contacted SBIG regarding the _distribution_ of their firmware in SUSE and they have no problem with it. They also have no problem in packaging their binary library in a SUSE non-OSS RPM, which I will release later. Now regarding the firmware, what sort of licence/agreement do you require from SBIG to release/sign so we can bundle their firmware in SUSE?
