[opensuse-factory] Installation of openSUSE 11.1 Beta 4 in VirtualBox 2.0.4 (Windows XP host) and Video Memory
Hi all, Yesterday (04-Nov-2008), I downloaded the ISO file of the openSUSE 11.1 Beta 4 DVD (through BitTorrent) in my laptop running Windows XP Professional (with SP3) and burned the ISO file to a DVD (by using an external DVD recorder that is connected to my laptop via USB). Then, I ran Sun xVM VirtualBox 2.0.4 and created a new virtual machine, allocating 512 MB of RAM (the host has 1 GB), 15 GB of hard disk space (saved in a .vdi file in an external hard drive connected via USB ) and I used the default recommended size for Video Memory (8 MB). I booted up the virtual machine from the DVD. I got the "Welcome" screen and then the regular menu on the green background (with options "Boot from Hard Disk", "Installation", "Repair Installed System", "Rescue System", "Check installation media", "Firmware Test" and "Memory Test"). I did NOT change the default "Video Mode" listed in the lower part of the screen (800 x 600). I selected the "Installation" option. A dialog box appeared saying "Starting... Loading Linux Kernel" and a progress bar ran from 0% to 100%. When it reached the 100%, the screen went completely BLACK! After waiting a minute or so, I reset the virtual machine and, when it reached the initial menu again, I selected the "Check installation media" option. But the problem happened again: the same dialog box appeared saying "Starting... Loading Linux Kernel" and a progress bar ran from 0% to 100%. When the progress bar reached the 100%, the screen went completely black. Because the problem seemed to be in the display, I went to the VirtualBox configuration of this virtual machine and *increased* the "Video Memory" that was allocated from the default value (8 MB) to 16 MB. I booted again from the DVD, chose the "Installation" option and this time the problem was SOLVED! After the progress bar reached 100%, the screen got black only for about 2 seconds and then it proceeded to the regular GUI installer. I did a complete (GNOME) installation and everything seems to be well. I also had created, in the past, an openSUSE 11.0 VirtualBox virtual machine (also from a DVD where I had burned the ISO file), in this same computer, with the default Video Memory (8 MB) suggested by VirtualBox and the problem did NOT happen. I also installed very recently an Ubuntu 8.10 desktop virtual machine from an ISO file burned to a CD (also on the same computer) with the default Video Memory (8 MB) with no problems. Has this problem happened to anyone else? I checked Bugzilla - http://bugzilla.novell.com/ - and did some searches with keyword "VirtualBox" and choosing the "openSUSE 11.1" from the "Product" dropdown list but I did not find this problem reported by anyone. The host has an Intel Mobile Pentium 4 (3.0 GHz) processor with 1 GB RAM, The graphics card (Display Adapter) is reported in the "System Information" tool (available in Microsoft Word 2003) as having a "Name" of "ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 SERIES", an "Adapter Type" of "ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Series AGP (0x4E50), ATI Technologies Inc. compatible" and the "Adapter RAM" is 64 MB (AFAIK, this video memory is dedicated - NOT shared ). Thanks in advance.
