Why this happens?
some are 'ring packages' (essential to the system) and guaranteed to not break. Those are usually updated in a first step. The 2nd batch can't pass its build and install tests, as they build against 'what is currently in openSUSE:Factory' - which means they are unresolvable before the first batch has been checked in. The result is this two-phase update for Qt libs (Max is working on a possible solution to 'link' non-ring stagings to ring package updates, but there is no promise yet as to when / if this ever works as intended) cheers Dominique

kontact (17.08.1 -> 17.08.2)
Hi, it seems like this fix has successfully stopped the memory leak in plasmashell, but now I have a strange behaviour: Kontact crashes on start, but only on an NVIDIA-Nouveau system (#1) and a Intel grafics system. If I run the identical system #1 with NVIDIA drivers from the great TW repo, kontact works. Otherwise it will crash. This seems weird to me. At least in this case, my guess is that it's related to the Qt WebEngine used to display mails (basically an embedded version of Chromium), because it's quite prone to crash on Noveau systems.

If Luca is right (and I think he is) then I would like to point out that you agreed to the following when you installed Mesa-dri-nouveau on your system: "WARNING: Nouveau DRI/3D driver selected. This driver is considered experimental and is known to have issues with applications that use certain 3D acceleration features of modern NVIDIA hardware. Symptoms include application crashes or lockups & crashes of your system's graphical environment. Older Hardware and less demanding applications may work just fine and do benefit from the Hardware acceleration features this driver offers over software emulation. Use of this driver is especially not recommended for use with the KDE Desktop Environment or Qt-based Applications. The hardware vendor potentially offers alternative drivers. Please click "I Agree" if you accept the risks that may come with the installation of this driver. Choose "I Disagree" to prevent installation of the driver and use software emulation instead." Interesting. Never suffered from any problems until the recent update. Anyhow, thanks, I now know it's rather related to webkit (see other thread), and it also happens on other hardware. Not webkit related at all. It's triggered by QtWebEngine (which is based on Chromium), that uses OpenGL from separate threads. And nouveau doesn't like that. I guess you do, because it is pretty damn hard to miss As the warning is injected in the package as a license, which requires explicit users consent before passing it, it means you have either seen a screen like this when you zypper dup: http://paste.opensuse.org/47484104 Or perhaps one like this when you installed nouveau via YaST http://paste.opensuse.org/53590257 The only way you can continue to either dup your system or install the package in the first place is either accepting the warning, or wilfully ignoring all warnings by running zypper with auto accept licenses. Either way, it's hard to have too much sympathy - we've done a thorough job as possible to warn people about the problems of nouveau - we even show the same warning if the user is primarily a GNOME user, despite the problems being primarily a Qt concern. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Unless you use "-l" to auto agree the licenses then you get the message "Automatically agreeing with Mesa-dri-nouveau package licence." as happened on my system this morning.

Or perhaps one like this when you installed nouveau via YaST
http://paste.opensuse.org/53590257
The only way you can continue to either dup your system or install the package in the first place is either accepting the warning, or wilfully ignoring all warnings by running zypper with auto accept licenses.
Either way, it's hard to have too much sympathy - we've done a thorough job as possible to warn people about the problems of nouveau - we even show the same warning if the user is primarily a GNOME user, despite the problems being primarily a Qt concern.

If Luca is right (and I think he is) then I would like to point out that you agreed to the following when you installed Mesa-dri-nouveau on your system:
"WARNING: Nouveau DRI/3D driver selected.
BTW: That warning is completely new to me, after two years of Nvidia GFX Card and Tumbleweed with Nouveau only.
Are you absolutely sure about "only"? I ask because /etc/X11/xorg_pci_ids/ was implemented around 20 months ago: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=972126#c6
Nouveau has always been the standard selection on my TW systems, neither did I choose it nor did I get that message, it simply worked... I didn't have many problems with it. Last week was the first time I gave in and installed the NVIDIA drivers, but only because of the recent repository (and to check if that was the problem's root).
Did I miss something or do something wrong? There are more than just NVidia and Nouveau drivers for NVidia gfxchips since quite some years ago. Modesetting, a separate driver package pre-server-17.0, integrated since (2015-02-05 on TW), is a third. None of my GeForce-equipped PCs have (or ever had) non-FOSS drivers installed. Most use modesetting, only the tiny balance nouveau. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." Proverbs 4:7 (New Living Translation)

Hi, this is not completely right, there are in fact only two feature rich drivers for non-ancient Nvidia cards: Of course the Nvidia closed-source blob and nouveau. Yet the nouveau driver consist of different layers, the most important ones are: * the in-kernel driver part * a "glue layer" (libdrm) * a driver for the XServer: xf86-video-nouveau (which you can indeed be replaced with xf86-video-modesetting) * an OpenGL driver in Mesa So even if you replace the XServer driver, it will still use the underlying kernel driver, see [1] for a general graphical representation. It is possible to blacklist the nouveau kernel driver, but doing this leaves you behind with a basic driver. [1] https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa_3D#/media/File:Linux_Graphics_Stack_2013.... Isn't all the complexity that comprises Xorg functionality more than most users complaining about Xorg trouble need to know or care or do anything about? The previous discussion follows from this warning shared by Richard:
__ Use of this driver is especially not recommended for use with the KDE Desktop Environment or Qt-based Applications. __
Is that warning actually applicable to the nouveau/kernel driver? To me, that statement looks like it's about the Xorg video nouveau driver, over which a user gets some realistic choice whether to install, not the integral nouveau/kernel driver, giving net installation choices totaling three, only two of which are FOSS, and only one of which is accompanied by any recommendation against. Well, the warning is stated the first time you install "Mesa-dri-nouveau", so part of the Mesa OpenGL implementation. The nouveau driver with its different layers is not good with multi-threaded OpenGL, which webkit uses to draw content on the screen. Yet the warning is set at the right place, as only the nouveau OpenGL implementation is set to trigger this specific multi-threading bug (Of course there are other bugs). A bit of a surprise to me is the fact that only the application (kontact) crashes and not the whole system freezes, so maybe the basic recovery functionality introduced to nouveau with a recent kernel (4.9 or 4.10?) actually helped here. As a sidenote: If you use xf86-video-modesetting, you will make extensive use of the OpenGL implementation, if available. Yet this is favorable in the long run, as developers can focus on implementing OpenGL (and Vulkan) instead of handling the extra X driver as well.
