[opensuse-factory] console low resolution
Hello, Please can any tell me the procedure to change the console resolution. My Problem is the graphic resolution in the console, I can't read this small letter. All my changes have no effect? I change grub (vga=0x314), disabled splash change all in /etc/sysconfig and make a new initrd? the result is a high resolution console? -- mit freundlichen Grüßen / best Regards, Günther J. 11.3 has KMS enabled by default so changing the VESA mode will not have any effect. You need to use a larger console font if the default one is too small. It can be changed with CONSOLE_FONT in /etc/sysconfig/console. Preinstalled fonts to choose from are in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

video=800x600 or eq.
That will lower the KMS resolution from the native resolution to 800x600. If you have a LCD this will likely result in blurry fonts due to interpolation, the correct(TM) solution is to use a larger fontsize, just as in X. Of the specs for modern widescreen LCDs I've seen, most list 800x600 & 1024x768 as alternatives to the native (optimal) resolution. What's less likely are explicit alternate widescreen modes, such as 1600x900 on a native 2048x1152, or 1400x900 on a native 1680x1050. Additionally, someone whose challenging eyesight demands a low resolution mode like 800x600 isn't particularly likely to notice the degradation ("blurring") in comparison to the native mode. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Sorry, I don't get what you're talking about. Please re-read what i wrote above, choosing an alternate font with a bigger size while keeping the native resolution gives you _both_ a sharp picture and larger letters. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'm talking about programmers who think tiny text is OK. For many, it's not. Low resolution modes make nice big legible characters that people with reading difficulty can handle, fuzzy or not.
Please re-read what i wrote above, choosing an alternate font with a bigger size while keeping the native resolution gives you _both_ a sharp picture and larger letters.
This is the usual problem with too small to start with - it makes difficult switching to large enough, unlike the opposite, which is easy due to high legibility to start with. Without KMS, in the grub menu one can on the fly using the nice legible big characters used in Grub's menus change or add a cmdline option to produce the desired bigger console text result. How does one do that when first one must get into /etc/sysconfig post-init? KMS is yet another usability regression. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Proverbs 16:21 (New Living Translation) Team OS/2 ** Reg. I have an HD LCD screen (1980x1024). When I bough it, I noticed My video card was not HD capable. So I used it some time with only 1600 pix wider. With such a good screen, the know LCD blurr was not visible at all. For the record, this is really *bad* advice. Firstly, the resolution can be changed more flexibly using the video= kernel parameter and secondly this is likely to cause trouble when using Xorg (i.e. falling back to the VESA driver) as KMS is becoming mandatory for more an more drivers. -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Note the form of response: "try", "is that better?" Before writing that response, on X600 with RC1 desktop kernel I tried alternatively both video=800x600 and video=1600x1200, and got what appears to be standard text mode 80x25. Then I tried nomodeset vga=788 and nomodeset vga=0x31a, and got expected traditional framebuffer results on the ttys both ways. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." How did you spell it? 314 is incomplete, needs 0x314 to work. 788 works here on radeon X600. What video chip do you have? Maybe there is a bug in the driver for yours? Maybe you need a driver-specific modeset disable like radeon.modeset=0.
The system tell me I have no drives and boot only in the system mode?
Something bad must be wrong. Does your Grub's menu.lst have a failsafe stanza that also does not work except with too small console fonts? Can you boot OK to runlevel 1 or 2 instead of 3 or 5?
Or meen you a other place? ... kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 showopts noresume splash=verbose 3 nomodeset vga=788 ...

This is very complicated ?
No, that's not complicated at all. First, you could install the terminus-font package and try the larger sizes (it offers 12x24, 10x20, 14x28 and 16x32 sizes which sould be much bigger). Just set CONSOLE_FONT in /etc/sysconfig/console to ter-1<size>n.psfu where <size> is 20, 24, 28, or 32 depending on your preference. If you don't like it you can use pretty much any fixed-width font. If it isn't already in PSF format you need to convert it to BDF using a font editor and then you can use the bdf2psf script(*) to convert it to PSF, gzip it, and put it in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts.
my 'normal' resolution is 1680x1050, but to change setting found errors ... the resolution ist to small :(.
Yes, depending on the size of the screen an 8 pixel font in this resolution can be quite small. * bdf2psf: http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/c/console-setup/console-setup_1.54... -- Guido Berhoerster -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

On comparing the CONSOLE_FONT="lat9w-16.psfu" entry in /etc/sysconfig/console to the contents of /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts it's entirely clear which to choose in order to get a legibly large enough console font, while the sheer number of entries there has to make one wonder why you would suggest yet more just to find one legibly large enough. What does 9w-16 mean? Where's the doc that addresses this subject?
