[opensuse-factory] Can you add a flash-player that is 64-bit
Hello all, Is there a chance that some one can add a flash-player that is 64-bit instead of 32-bit. I'm running 64-bit. However, every time I ask Yast to install a flash-player, I keep getting the i586 flash-player. I downloaded the DVD_X86_64. Cheers! There is a beta 64 bit version of flash, which works, however it is not priority for adobe.. there have been no update since Nov last year.. That's why you get only 32 bit flash with the distribution. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

The 64bit version is still considered an Alpha release. It is formally called Preview 3. So I doubt it will be added to openSUSE repos until it is stable. You can go here: http://lizards.opensuse.org/tag/flash/ to download the 64bit alpha version called 'Square'
Cheers!

I had tried out the 64-bit you mentioned and it worked great! We may not see a stable 64-bit until openSUSE 11.5 -- Cheers! Roman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

which is bad, it's no more an alpha, it gain the pr state in november, but unfortunately, like everything in Adobe world they didn't update it. A war between them and M$ ? But anyway they will not have a real choice, and will have to push it outside. Let Mozilla deliver a FF4 64bits windows version, Then M$ IE9 and adobe will follow. (months and years in late) :D Anyway I'm using that one (flash is in fact always delivered with holes in it) from last october (was pr1) in FF and 64bits on factory and I never get a crash due to that. When I was using nsplugin-wrapper and the 32bits version, there's always something not working, or crashing. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Is there anyway to create a placeholder so that we can direct people to where to get the Beta so that they can then install it?(and since there's no installer and you just put it where it's needed it's not that much to do with it). The current version is very stable and works with Hulu, where the previous version was kinda buggy. Of course, they don't have a full released 64bit version for any platform yet. I use flashblock under firefox anyway so I only see the Flash that I actually want to see(which is probably about less than 1% of what's out there). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

+1 How about a x86_64 variant of the "pullin-flashplayer" package in non-free or on packman? I use oS 11.2/x86_64 and I've been running flashplayer_square_p2_64bit_linux_092710.tar.gz containing 2010-09-18 01:18 libflashplayer.so for quite a while and flashplayer10_2_p3_64bit_linux_111710.tar.gz containing 2010-11-17 01:10 libflashplayer.so for a couple of weeks now, both quite noticably more stable[2] and without the hangs etc. than I had with the 32bit/nspluginwrapper alternative (and with gnash and swfdec). In short: the "alpha" (or "beta") 64bit version works better and more reliable than the alternatives. But, as IMHO anyone should, I use 'prefbar'[3] along with NoScript[4], AdBlockPlus[5] and Ghostery[6] (in descending importance and AFAIK ascending CPU-power-required order[7]) and I activate flash via prefbar only rarely (YT and others do work though, but I usually use clive for YT ;) As the "pullin" basically just has to download the tar.gz[0], and extract the single libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib64/browser-plugins/, it should be rather easy[1]. BTW: is there a way to package FF/Seamonkey/TB extensions in a useful way? I think prefbar a "MUST" (even more so in FF than in SM which I use), and NoScript an emphatic "SHOULD" ... When (de-)activating JS, Flash, Java, etc. pp. with a single click in the prefbar, it's much more easy to usually _not_ have them active ... No one really does that on a "session" or even "site" Basis via Edit -> Preferences -> .... (in FF or SM), eh? -dnh [0] Last I've downloaded: http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplayer10/flashplayer10_2_p3_64b... [1] I won't officially volunteer, as I can't promise a result, but I may hack up a simple .spec. A fancy version might build a .rpm around that single .so "on-the-fly" even ;) Without error checking, in %post: curl %{url} | tar xz -C %{_libdir}/browser-plugins -f - chown root.root %{_libdir}/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so chmod 755 %{_libdir}/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so Doing dl to temp + error-checking + check md5/sha" && extract + check md5/sha && "mv libflashplayer.so %{_libdir}/browser-plugins/ + chown + chmod would probably be better. But you get the idea. A %ghost %{_libdir}/browser-plugins/libflashplayer.so might be a good idea too, would it? [2] and both with "locked down" settings, i.e. I once set them (forbidding most), I then chmod'ed all files/dirs in ~/.adobe/ ~/.macromedia to ro and deleted anything unrelated to settings. i.e. there's only ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player/[..]/sys/settings.sol ro-accessible. [3] http://prefbar.mozdev.org/ [4] http://noscript.net/ [5] http://adblockplus.org/en/ [often disabled here, as I've disabled most adservers + trackers I come upon via /etc/hosts] [6] http://www.ghostery.com/ [dito] [7] Actually, Ghostery might not need as much as ABP or NoScript. Just look when the latest security fix for 32bit flashplayer came out. We shouldn't want to help users install an unmaintained / unfixed flashplayer and help hackers to compromise their systems. a) was the 64bit/Linux version also affected? Mine calls itself File name: libflashplayer.so Shockwave Flash 10.3 d162 in "about:plugins", if the 10.3 is significant, it might be a different codebase than 10.2.x ... b) I rarely have Flash enabled (thanks to prefbar ;) anyways (I usually DL the stuff I want with e.g. clive (which I build in OBS)) and 'clive -s YT_URL' works nicely with mplayer configured as player program[1] ;) c) and if I do, so far, the 64bit version has been by far more stable than any of the alternatives in the last couple of years. I'd be thankful though, if you can elaborate on some specific information, esp. regarding "a)". -dnh [1] ==== ~/.cliverc ==== --stream-exec='mplayer -quiet -really-quiet %i;' ==== -- "Worst case of testosterone poisoning I've ever seen." -- Lt. why not? I don't know specifics about the fixed bugs, but in my experience programming bugs that only affect 32bit machines and not 64bit machines are pretty rare. It does happen, though, as Nvidia recently learned the hard way. -Todd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
