[opensuse-factory] 'gargantuan' (bloated) sizes
20170712 64 bit en_US This is a relatively minimal installation, with onlyRequires=true, barely enough Plasma to have a working Plasma desktop, IceWm as only alternative WM, no -32bit packages, no Java, no *office*, 17 total *fonts* packages (none CJK), no Gimp, no Chrom*, no GoogleEarth, no Flash, no SeaMonkey, no TB or other mail apps, no VLC or mplayer* or other MM apps, etc. (1422 total packages installed). Two 'zypper dup's, today plus May 2, produced a /var/log/zypper.log 150% the size of one (bloated) vmlinuz/initrd pair, 20MB, 153,008 lines, of which 149,116 are for the 2017-07-15 dup, plus a kernel removal. By comparison, /var/log/zypp/history has only 1,511 2017-07-15 lines. I can remember when a whole operating system didn't need 20MB (32bit OS/2 v2.11). :-( Oxygen-icon-theme-scalable consumes 327MB, 127% of the size of a (freshly un-) installed 4.10.x kernel (257MB). :-( -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." I've saved a lot of memory on my system by disabling some logging: Too much system logging (by e.g. the KDE screen dimmer) can be prevented by ading the following to /etc/environment: QT_LOGGING_RULES='*=false' This also saves about a GiB of memory it seems. Also run kdebugdialog as well as kdebugdialog5 and click on "Disable all debug output". -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

computer-laptop.svg (the biggest file in the package): It contains three instances of one and the same fucking 1280x800 bitmap, just with different filters. The desktop wallpaper, its reflection on the chassis, and once more for its reflection on the keyboard keys. As if the Clone feature was unknown. That'll be a lot of facepalming today. 29% of all icons contain at least one PNG bitmap of some size. Which means the scalable set is not really scalable.. anyway. list-add-font.svg: running the "Vacuum" operation in inkscape says "974 defs cleaned" (think of: gradients not used by anything anymore). Not sure whether that is a destructive operation, as inkscape fails to recognize some tags as shown on stderr. On top of that, I also do not think the gratitious use of gaussian blur filters helps rendering speed, so if you ever needed a reason for why $desktop feels slow: 85 status/weather-snow.svg 86 applets/org.kde.plasma.kickerdash.svg 91 applets/org.kde.plasma.icontasks.svg 98 status/weather-storm.svg 100 apps/kverbos.svg 103 status/weather-storm-day.svg 105 status/weather-storm-night.svg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

to this I can only say: +1. repeatedly. Problem is, that level of graphic design skills usually does not come for free. Question is: does SLES/SLED use the same (bloated) icons? Cheers MH

oxygen5-icon-theme-scalable is not required by anything, and I don't have it installed here. The reason you have it is likely because you locked the (*much* smaller) oxygen5-icon-theme package. The oxygen icon theme itself *is* required, so zypper installs the scalable one instead in that case. Allow oxygen5-icon-theme (~10MiB) to be installed, and you should be able to remove the large oxygen5-icon-theme-scalable.
