[opensuse-factory] Games on openSUSE 10.2
Hi On SUSE Linux 10.1 we had about 5 small game packages in our default installation + an additional Games selection used for all game packages. Should we do it similar for openSUSE 10.2? Any other proposals? The 5 game packages on SUSE Linux 10.1 were: - enigma - freeciv - frozen-bubble - supertux - xmoto (also often used as 3D test application) In Alpha4 we don't have any games packages at all. Let us know what you think. Best regards, Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) We need games. They're the ultimate argument for converting Jane and Joe to Linux ("see, you have Solitaire and a whole bunch more"). I'd suggest: kdegames (board, puzzle, whatever there is) frozen-bubble xmoto chromium lbreakout penguins (the lemmings clone) some invaders or galaga clone that looks modern. Too bad there's no Chicken Invaders for Linux. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

+1 Needs a mix of things from Solitaire through to the best "action" ones we can find. I agree with Richard and Silviu. We need games, no question. Both installed by default - and more on the discs and on ftp. Freeciv, Frozen-Bubble and Supertux are untouchable I think. In addition I think we should have kmines, some card game(s), a chess game, lbreakout2 and Metal Blob Solid - Blob Wars (it's a very nice shoot'em up, arcade style game, http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/blobWars.php). Ksudoku might also be a good idea - I don't know about the rest of the world - but sudoku has been very big in Denmark the last year or so. However including all Kgames in standard installation would be overdoing it I think. I very much like the feature of a 3D game installed by default, for testing purposes etc. Xmoto is fine I guess, and so was gl-117 - but Racer (Racing simulator, http://racer.nl), Glest (RTS, http://www.glest.org/en/index.html) or Cube (FPS, http://www.cubeengine.com) would be a lot more impressive and they'd prove a point about Linux gaming. But of course they'd also take up more space. Wow! Looks like the game selection for the default installation I did in the past was not that wrong. :-)
In addition I think we should have kmines, some card game(s), a chess game,
--> kdegames (kmines, kpat), knights --> KDE-Games Pattern
lbreakout2
Another vote for lbreakout2. :-)
and Metal Blob Solid - Blob Wars (it's a very nice shoot'em up, arcade style game, http://www.parallelrealities.co.uk/blobWars.php).
"Lost connection to MySQL server during query". Hmm, is there already a package in the buildservice?
Ksudoku might also be a good idea - I don't know about the rest of the world - but sudoku has been very big in Denmark the last year or so.
The same in Germany. We should consider to add this package to KDE-Games pattern.

Sure.

Racer has been dropped a long time ago (see Wishlist for reasons), Glest is simply to big and Cube is a 1st person shooter, which we don't want to ship on our distribution for legal reasons. Otherwise we might lose the right to ship "non-rated" games for the future. I remember all the nethack frontends have been dropped some time ago. IIRC one of the main raisons was that they no longer work with newer nethack backends, e.g. Falcon's Eye. I have never used a graphical version of Nethack. I have won a few times the various versions of Nethack. I do not get to play it very often as my company takes a lot of my time. I do have an account on the build service. Maybe I will attempt to try one. I do not know enough about the graphical versions to do much, right now. It will take some time to get up to speed on the code and to get it right. I have done packaging from source. I can not commit to any time frame. I do have my business to keep going. From what I see the current code is the process of being moved to subversion. The mail list does not give any idea on when it will be complete only that it is in the process. It's pretty bloody - but it's little yellow blobs shooting aliens in a 2D platform style - not humans. Well, don't even have an account there, and only built one very simple RPM yet - and didn't do a particularly good job.. damn spec file macros ;) The RPM supplied from the site built on Mandrake 10.0 works nicely on 10.1.

Nope. But after I wrote it I realized that the RPM alone is 45 megs, guess that's too much. Also, I know a lot of people that play billiards and mahjong. There was a very nice OpenGL billiards game (foobilliards AFAIR) and mahjong is in the KDE games. Not only the size matters, also the amount of games. When you have to many games in the menu, you no longer will find the best ones. Adding kdegames3-board would add 11 games to the default pattern, not only kmahjongg.

Speaking of children's games, you should consider also shipping TuxPaint, a drawing program that I have found kids to love. What about shipping with the good old Abuse game btw? It is under 3 Mb and is free software. The graphics are of low resolution, being an old title, but I still find them to be very good and the gameplay is just superb. http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~trandor/abuse/ Cheers, Ricardo Em Quarta, 6 de Setembro de 2006 14:35, o Herbert Graeber escreveu:

Speaking of children's games, you should consider also shipping TuxPaint, a drawing program that I have found kids to love.
We ship it since SUSE 8.2.
What about shipping with the good old Abuse game btw? It is under 3 Mb and is free software. The graphics are of low resolution, being an old title, but I still find them to be very good and the gameplay is just superb. http://www.labyrinth.net.au/~trandor/abuse/
We ship it since at least SUSE 6.3. Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.) On SUSE Linux 10.1 we had about 5 small game packages in our default installation + an additional Games selection used for all game packages. Should we do it similar for openSUSE 10.2? Any other proposals?
This one is nice: http://ri-li.sourceforge.net/
Really nice. My childs will love it!
This one looks interesting (check the video). I didn't try it yet as it has some exotic build dependencies: http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/uv/fretsonfire/

My kids like gcompris (gcompris.net and packman) But probably too large for the distro... Yes, this was the main reason I dropped it for 9.0. We had it on 8.1 and 8.2. This would be something for the buildservice. Cool. Unfortunately both are much to big for the default installation. But of course it would be cool to see packages for them on the buildservice. :-) Stefan Public Key available ------------------------------------------------------ Stefan Dirsch (Res. & Dev.)
