[opensuse-factory] GNOME 3.10 Software application vs. YaST?
According to 3.10 release notes: "GNOME 3.10 includes a brand new application for finding and installing applications, called Software. It provides an integrated place to do all your software related tasks, like browsing, installing and removing applications, and viewing and installing software updates." Is it supposed to be replacement for YOU and other software related tasks? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Replacement? probably not, but as an alternative gnome-software does provide a pretty snazzy 'app store'-like interface, which I think makes it the best option for 'discovering' new software you might otherwise not know was available - YaST software management often works best when you know what you're looking for, and has much more control for things such as selecting specific versions and learning the details about a package Please note, gnome-software in GNOME 3.10 and currently packaged in GNOME:Factory/13.1 is provided by both upstream and openSUSE as a 'tech preview' - I've tested it and it 'works', but we're not installing it as part of the default openSUSE GNOME installation In fact, if you do chose to install gnome-software, please note that this will automatically install packagekit-branding-upstream which alters your PackageKit settings - this is to enable Packagekit to populate the database which gnome-software requires, but results in a really, really, really long first refresh of PackageKit, which we normally avoid with the default settings provided by packagekit-branding-openSUSE Hope this helps -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

What is causing that delay? Does gnome software only work on the repo data or does it require extra web services? cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It's only on repodata and locally available date in /usr/share/app-info. The issue with PK is a zypp-backend limitation as far as I understand, where our "file search' capability is too slow (this is why the default was changed to 'NO' for openSUSE). If you switch this back to TRUE and then initiate a pkcon refresh, you'll see that this takes much longer (especially on first run; it builds up a desktop-db as well). The parameter Dominique refers to is "ScanDesktopFiles=" in /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf The upstream default is 'true' as is required by gnome-software, as packaged in branding-upstream-PackageKit Our distribution default is 'false' as packaged in branding-openSUSE-PackageKit
