[opensuse-factory] WARNING: Current libzypp might deinstall complete system while updating
Hi, This is a reminder to be extra careful if you use zypper update with current factory. Apparently because of a bug it seems possible that your complete system is deinstalled instead of being updated while running "zypper up -t package" For details, please see Bug #301676. Note that this even happens with YaST, but contrary to zypper, YaST at least installs the new packages after deleting the old ones. It's still a bug there and potentially dangerous if something fails and the update process gets aborted between deleting all packages and installing the new ones, but it's not as fatal as using zypper apparently. I got bit before I saw this. Now I can't update anything because a bunch of files were erased, apparantly including the one that extracts the downloaded files from the rpm being upgraded. Which begs the question: Which file or files do I have to restore from the install DVD in order to get minimum update capability again? One of the files erased appears to have been the unzipper library which I think is LIBBZ2 so I'm not sure how to extract stuff from the rpms restored from the DVD. I see that bug 301676 is marked 'resolved' fixed. Which version of zypper/libzypp contains the fix? See comment #12 by Stefan Schubert: I have reverted the fix for Bug 299819 Package submitted 3.18.2 This is libzypp. Install at least this version plus a zypper that fits (for me, it's zypper-0.8.14). This might break some of dependencies to the YaST module, so I suggest to fix those as well. With this libzypp, you should have a working zypper again. I believe 'zypper up -t package' will try to fix also the broken dependencies from the disaster, but you better check the proposal zypper presents. HTH Stano
