[opensuse-factory] preload
Hello list, does anybody know the reason why preload is not present in 12.1 and factory anymore? Is it ever supposed to be back? Thanks, Andreas -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It is not in 12.1. Search the Factory archives on preload or FIBMAP errors to see some of the discussions about it. I'm guessing that might give an indication as to why it was removed. Nope, it's obsolete with systemd, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger aj@{suse.com,opensuse.org} Twitter/Identica: jaegerandi SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I wouldn't say it's obsolete with systemd, but it doesn't work with systemd. Obsolete has readahead support, but as many people reported on the systemd mailing list, this only works for SSDs and preload is optimized for rotating disks (which should be the majority of users). But as it is, maintaining preload doesn't make sense unless better integration into systemd is done and systemd developers have no interest and would rather see the kernel improved to handle concurrent requests to rotating disks better. While I agree with this, we wait for the kernel to improve for many, many years. And some people say that Kmail is good for nothing. :-)) So KMail is a little buggy. I haven't found it to be buggy in a way that effects my workflow in any critical fashion. And mind you I switched FROM Thunderbird. In any event, since when was openSUSE determined to be the least buggy? lol -- Never eat more than you can lift. -- Miss Piggy
